Mac Studio M1 Ultra GPU glitch

Hello everyone,


I've had Mac Studio for about a week, in a M1 Ultra 64 core GPU configuration. I just discovered a problem when working with the 3D software Cinema4D (versions R25, R26 and 2023). When the software is on, it does GPU glitches even in macOS finder windows and dock. When I turn it off everything is OK. I also experienced something similar when working in Unity 2021, but only two times and for a few milliseconds.


GPU benchmarks like Cinebench or Geekbench 5 don't do these problems. Maya and Blender is also fine.


Do you think it's just a bug in the software and poor optimization for M1 Ultra, or could my M1 Ultra be faulty one? Is there anyone with the same Mac Studio who could try a trial version of Cinema4D?


My configuration:

  • Mac Studio M1 Ultra, 64core GPU, 64Gb memory and 1Tb storage.
  • macOS Monterey 12.6
  • Apple Pro Display XDR

I think your Mac is fine, if you open octane X and render there everything runs fine.


It also makes no sense to me that everything magically goes back to normal as soon as I quit cinema 4d. And BTW this is a new thing, I ran c4d a few months ago on this mac and everything was working fine. It can also be that Apple broke things in an update, as you can see Maxon seems to think so. See below the response I got from them.


"There are many known issues with M1 Ultra and M1 Max devices which are unfortunately difficult to troubleshoot because they are not always repeatable even on devices with identical configurations. This is most likely due to the fact that these devices are new and, we suspect, still have some bugs that need to be addressed by Apple, hopefully through firmware, rather than hardware, upgrades.


Nonetheless our developers are trying to resolve these issues on the Cinema 4D and Redshift side, and hopefully they should be resolved as updates and releases for those products come out."

I posted the same question on Maxon and the answer was:


"Considering it happens on the whole UI, not just C4D, I'd try to update the OS, a different monitor then if everything fails return it to Apple."


But they completely ignore the fact that the glitch in the macOS UI will stop when the Cinema4D is shut down.


Cinema4D is a widely used program and I find it strange that it is not written about anywhere if it does not work on the M1 Ultra.

The most glaring item I see in your report is that you are heavily invested in Maxon tools.


Because of that, the presence of a different maker's tools (black magic) seems troubling.


I suggest you set aside Black magic tools, and see if the problem is fixed.


Macs work best when they are lean and mean. Most things you add tend to be clutter, not an improvement. You have a lot of little haxies added that could lead to instability. I suggest you review the add-ons shown in the Etrecheck report, and remove ALL that you did not actually use TODAY. You can always re-install if they turn out to be vital.

The BIG 'litmus test" is restarting is Safe Mode, where no third-party add-ons are loaded. "works in safe mode, fails in regular mode" implies "it's something you added".


The usual method for involving Apple is to contact Apple support. The first responders will work through some scripts that have been develeoped for this sort of problem solving.


In general, if the issue is isolated to one third-party software package, they will refer you to the maker of that package, and tell you third-party software makers are responsible for making their Apps compatible with the Mac, and not the reverse.


If you appeared to have a complex hardware-related or deep MacOS problem (which these symptoms do NOT appear to support) there is a second tier of experts that can be brought in. These specialists have additional, deeper expertise in different areas of Mac hardware and MacOS on specific models of Macs, but are far less patient, and are not willing to chase third-party software issues. If unresolved by the specialists, a Bug Report would be created.

Posted the same thing on the Redshift forums but copying here for visibility. Filed bug report with Apple and Maxon.


This exact problem is happening to me and only with C4D. Other gpu heavy apps all work fine. Narrowed it down to using C4d on the Ultra in combination with Pro Display XDR. Using a low-dpi Dell ultrawide works fine. Running the same build of C4D on an M1 Max MBP through the XDR is also fine, so it appears to only be a problem with high DPI displays ( particularly the XDR ) and the Ultra.


What's strange is while keeping C4D open, going from the XDR to the Dell and back to the XDR fixes it until the session is ended. Restarting C4D or the system brings back the problem. Happens in both r26 and r2023.


Since the problem only occurs with C4d and corrects itself it means it's almost certainly a graphics driver / C4D bug and not a hardware problem.


Specs : C4D r26 + r2023. M1 Ultra 128gb ram. 20c cpu 48c gpu. macOS 12.6
