iOS 16 Smart battery Case photo button

The photo button on my Smart battery case no longer works when the phone is locked on iOS 16. and 16.0.2. If the phone is unlocked then it opens the camera app and can be used to take photos. When locked, all that happens is that the camera warning LED illuminates, it cannot be used to take photos.

Hey there amac9876,

We'd like to help, but we'll need more details to better understand what's happening, along with ruling out some possible causes:

  1. Which model are you using, and were you able to use the photo button on the case to take photos in the past while the screen was locked?
  2. What occurs when you open the Camera app from the Lock Screen, then test taking a photo with that button?
  3. Sometimes unexpected behavior can be resolved with a restart: Restart your iPhone

Cheers!

Yes, same problem here (downloaded iOS 16.1.1 today and hasn't worked since then). I'm very upset about this - the camera hardware button was the reason I switched to Apple in the first place, and has been the reason I don't want to upgrade my phone. I often wear gloves or only have one hand free - could still take pictures, thanks to the camera button. Now all that's gone, thanks to a poor update. I contacted support who tried to give me the impression something must be wrong with my phone (even though I sent them the link to this thread).

I'm really, really hoping this will be addressed in a future update - but I'm not confident that it will, as Apple obviously prefer people to buy new iPhones rather than keep using the old ones. Very angry that it's not even possible to go back to the old iOS version.

I agree. I love my 11 Pro for everyday photos, and the camera button makes the whole thing usable in all situations. I tried the 13 Pro last year but wasn't happy with it, as it no longer permits deactivating the "smart HDR" which ruined several photos (I'd like to have a say in how much I want my photos edited). Seems this option still hasn't been returned one year on.

I don't expect Apple to provide updates for ever and ever for older phones. But if updates are provided, then I do expect to be able to install them without having to be afraid of losing functions that worked fine previously.

I have an genius bar appointment at my local Apple store this weekend regarding this issue. Will let you guys know what comes of it.
