What is the point of the file named "sentinel"?

I was looking through iTunes' files and I saw the hidden file named "sentinel". It didn't have any extensions (i.e. .exe, .pdf, .zip, etc.), so I opened it via Notepad and saw... a blank text file. Why is it there?

I believe it is updated before and after the .itl file is updated and can be used to detect if the .itl file might be corrupt because an update was interrupted. It is normal for the file to be there, leave it as is.
