How Can I Import a VOB File into iMovie

Years ago I took a video with my camcorder and put it onto a DVD. I am trying to import the videos from the DVD into iMovie so I can break them down into half a dozen videos to share on YouTube. The video is in VOB format and I am unable to load that into iMovie. I converted it to Video -H.264 + MP3 (MP4) and saved to my desktop, but still could not import it into iMovie. I am a beginner with iMovie, so if anyone can help with this I would really appreciate your advice (and the more detailed, the better). Thanks

A VOB file can be converted into MP4/AAC, that can then be imported into iMovie. Handbrake will do the job by default. The converted format that you used is different.

You can get Handbrake here:

https://handbrake.fr/

A simple way to do it is to open Handbrake and do a File/Open Source. Navigate to your video and choose it as the source from the resulting screen. Then do File/Start Encoding. Wait a couple of minutes for the conversion to complete. Then save and import the converted clip into iMovie. You can just drag it into the iMovie project timeline.

That's great. Good 'ol Hanbrake.

To split up your movie, import your video. Put you playhead at the place where you want to do a split. Then do a Modify/Split Clip to create a split at the playhead's location. Repeat the process at the various in-points and out-points that you desire. That will give you segments to work with -- move around, delete. . Then select a segment or segments. Do an Edit/Copy, Create a new project. Then do an Edit/Paste of the segments into the new project's timeline.

Rich, I downloaded Handbrake and converted the VOB file to mp4 (I do not see an mp4/AAC option) and saved it to my desktop. But when I go to iMovie, and try to drag that folder, I get this message -- No importable files. None of the selected files or folders can be imported. That is the same message I got when I used the other format via VLC. Now what?
