Newly bought apple laptop stolen before registration and activation.

My wife bought a Mac Laptop at Costco. Before it got registered and activated, the device was stolen all we have is the serial number. Is it possible to track it.

Troubleshooting a Stolen Device:

Use Find My: Use the Find My App to Locate a Missing Device or Item - Apple Support

If Find My was enabled with this, then you may be able to locate it there. Note that this is based off of the last time the device they were connected to was itself connected to the internet.


Secure your Info:

If concerned for device access, then (A)verify your devices, and (B)secure your account:

A. Verify your Devices:

Verify that all devices are logged in to your account, by using this link: Check your Apple ID Device List to See where you're Signed in - Apple Support

then...

B. Modify your Credentials:

Having been stollen, someone lily has your credentials. So, by all means, modifying them.

If you did not have an opportunity to enable "Find My" on this Mac, before it was stolen, there is no method via Apple, to track it. Sorry. Providing the serial number to your local law enforcement agency could help, assuming they are staff available to physically locate it. Otherwise, just having the serial number does not help them track it remotely.


Also be aware, Apple does not actively participate in the recovery of lost or stolen devices .. so, again, if this notebook was not initially set up with an Apple ID and had "Find My" activated, there is nothing anyone here, nor Apple can do to assist you with this. If she did set it up with her ID, she should immediately, change her Apple ID password.
