Error Code 0xe8000065; Apple Mobile Device USB Driver seems to be missing.

This problem only came up over the last few days, without any prompt. I have tried updating all the relevant drivers, reinstalling the USB Host Controller Drivers, reinstalling iTunes, updating my phone, updating Windows, and using other USB connectors.

The main problem seems to be getting the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver in the first place. The method that this article suggests (using a different cable) does not work either.

Not really sure what to do here.

Good news! I seem to have found the issue. I'm... honestly not proud that I didn't try this earlier, but it was my VPN. As it turns out, having a VPN on while trying to connect to iTunes completely messes stuff up. Regrettably, I only made this connection after resetting my phone and eventually reinstalling the VPN.

Thanks for all your help though!

Are you using the Microsoft Store version of iTunes, or the traditional installer? The Apple Mobile Device Service should be part of the second installation method only. You might switch to the other method, or tear down iTunes again and install the previous build if AMDS isn't installing with the current one. See links to recent installers at the very bottom of Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates - Apple Community.

Hmm. What changed 3-4 days ago? Did you update the phone? Or was it a Windows update? Perhaps you need to use system restore to undo that change and put back whatever version of iTunes was installed at the time. What build of iTunes did you try to reinstall AMDS with? If you used the most recent build, 12.12.5.8, then you shouldn't have got that error. I realise I hadn't yet updated the user tip with the latest installer links, so here they are.
