I bought a donated macBook Pro lab top. When I boot it up it offers to REinstall OSX, then reads OS X El Capitan and I hit continue and when it goes to verify computer's elegibility with Apple "Error occurred while preparing the installation.

You may need to set the date to a time in 2017, 2016, or perhaps earlier. Launch the Terminal app from the Utilities menu and issue the following command to set the date & time to Jan. 2, 2017 @ 11:33am:
date -u 0102113317
If there are no errors, quit the Terminal app, then select the "Reinstall macOS" option.
