iPhone 14 Pro - Wireless Charging not working with slim standard case and standard QI charger

iPhone 14 Pro - Wireless Charging not working with slim standard case and standard QI charger!

I suspect it is a design flaw that iPhone 14 Pro cannot be charged on flat surface chargers (std Qi chargers, cars, furniture etc). I think the charge coil is located next to the large camera bump and that a slim 0.4mm camera case and the camera bump make the gap between charger coil and coil in phone too wide. I hope that this could be resolved with a SW update but I can not risk being stuck with the phone for 2 years on contract so I will return it for now. Note that my 4 wireless chargers worked fine with my iPhone 12 Pro.

It seems as though the camera bump is not allowing it to lay flat and charge. Boo Apple. Now what do we do after we have spent money on wireless charging devices? Shame on you and all the money we spent on a ‘new’ phone that can’t use ‘new’ technology 🥺🥺🥺 will they recall them and give us new ones?

i just purchased the OtterBox Wireless Charging Station (Qi) and I found that it wouldn’t begin changing my phone unless a portion of the camera bump was on the charger. It was like a magnetic pull was required. Needless to say, I don’t want to ruin my camera, so the OtterBox Wireless Charging System will be returned. The Apple wireless charger (much) smaller works fine. I was hoping to use the OtterBox system due to portable (no wire) charging.

If you thought you were writing Apple here, you are not. This is a user to user only forum. Apple was right however. Apple is not responsible for the design of the Kia charger. If it won't charge your iPhone wirelessly, that's on Kia's design. I own a Mercedes, which won't charge my iPhone 14 Pro Max either. So, I simply plug my phone into the USB Charging cord in my car if I need to charge it.

Many old chargers still work with iPhone. I have older chargers which will still charge my iPhone 14 Pro Max. I have some which wouldn't and I gave them away. Apple didn't change from Qi Standard. They simply moved the charging spot on the phone to the exact center of the back of the phone. Then they put a magnet around it to align perfectly with a MagSafe charging puck. That may prevent some chargers in some cars from being able to work. You say you own a 2023 car. MagSafe was introduced on iPhone with iPhone 12. So three years ago. One would imagine automobile manufacturers have had enough time to factor that into their cars?

If you can't use the charging plate in your car, do what I do in my Mercedes and plug it into a USP port.

They picked a standard, and then abandoned it. Like somebody

wrote above.

The suggestion that the car manufactures should follow

instead of follow standard is ......

**Also, note that Magsafe is not wireless charging, it is a

magnetic connector charging port where the cable attaches to the device. I do

like magsafe but not at the cost of losing good working wireless charging.

Some of you do not own an iphone 14 Pro and this thread is

for the phone 14 Pro only. i14 Pro Max may very well work slightly better why

you have some luck on old chargers.

I sent the i14 Pro back and got a used i13 Pro to replace the i12 Pro instead -

works!

1) Apple did not abandon anything; wireless charging works wonderfully with a 14 Pro

regardless of whether you are using a standard Qi charger or a MagSafe charger, just as it does on a 14 and 14 Pro Max.

2) MagSafe charging on an iPhone is a magnetic locating ring that surrounds the wireless charging pad. There is no physical connection, it’s purely wireless charging that provides an assist in colocating the phone’s charging coil over the charging pad’s.

So you are incorrect on both counts.

1) But they did. Several “standard” qI chargers won’t work because of the changes made. The lip on the camera area doesn’t allow those chargers to work correctly, just like in the vehicle

2) MagRing may not have an electrical conductive connection, but it isn’t all wireless. It lifts up off the surface to account for the camera lip, so that the charging surface can once again be flat against the back of the phone

so not wrong in either case

What wireless charging pad did they give you? Just because it was included by a retailer does not mean it will work with your device.

The MagSafe charging puck always works.

But so does the Mophie I bought to use with my iPhone X.

Your experience with your car is exactly what I've said before - it's due to poor assumptions made by your auto maker.

I have this same issue. Recently got a new car with a wireless charging plate in it and my 14Pro Max won’t charge on it properly. Seriously inconvenient design flaw. I have a mag safe case to try help it and still does not make a connection. This is a really bad stuff up from Apple, while I love the phone, it’s disappointing that when the design was finalised it seems like no one thought to test on wireless charge plates that are flat!

I’ve tried a variety of different cases now, even no case (which was worse).

The design flaw was made by your car's manufacturer, not Apple, and only they can fix it should they choose to.

Apple is without blame here; device manufacturers are not responsible for what third-party accessory makers do or to force their new devices to conform to those bad assumptions.

A great example is automotive cup holders; it's not McDonald's responsibility to limit all future cup designs to only those that would fit in existing vehicle cupholders.

You are entitled to your own opinion as I am mine. Like I said I love the phone but this issue seems to only impact this model. Have tried a variety of other iPhones in the same wireless charger and all charge fine. This model cannot sit flat making numerous wireless chargers incompatible. Anything that is a flat plate charger will not work, which is a shame because most car ones I have seen are a flare plate.

Our 14 Pro is the exact same size and shape as your iPhone 14 Pro and yet, in our Mercedes it charges. I will say the 14 Pro is in a case, which is MagSafe as we use MagSafe charging at home and office. We rarely charge our phone wirelessly in the car. It's usually in a cup phone holder, plugged in for Apple CarPlay as our Mercedes isn't wireless CarPlay capable and needs to be plugged in for CarPlay to work.
