Audio Slows and Crackles, 13 inch 2022 MacBook Pro, M2, stopping coreaudiod helps

Hey, folks. I got a new MacBook Pro in part because for a long time I was having an audio problem in my old 2012 MacBook Pro where after using it for a while, a spooky thing happened where an audio/video problem happened. It affected different apps differently, but a common way was that it would bring videos to a stop while continuing audio output, but then if you muted the video, the video would proceed as usual. The engineering team was mystified, so I got a new computer and hoped it was a hardware problem, or maybe a problem with my outdated software.

Unfortunately no! It's not quite as strange this time, I just get awful audio that proceeds slowly and roughly. Now I know to quit out of coreaudiod using the Activity Monitor and this fixes things right up, but I'd be ecstatic to eliminate this problem entirely. It's tough too, tech support always wants me to test other accounts, but it takes at least a day or two of use for the problem to rear its head.

Has anyone else encountered anything like this? Does anyone have a clue as to what might be happening?

Hello joeydani,

To help resolve this issue and work towards a resolution, try starting your Mac in safe mode. Safe mode can help bypass software that causes conflicts and resolve many issues. Depending on the results you receive, follow the additional steps from this article: How to use safe mode on your Mac

How to use safe mode
Determine whether you're using a Mac with Apple silicon, then follow the appropriate steps:
Apple silicon
1. Shut down your Mac.
2. Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button until you see the startup options window.
Select your startup disk, then press and hold the Shift key while clicking “Continue in Safe Mode.”
Log in to your Mac. You might be asked to log in again.
Intel processor
1. Turn on or restart your Mac, then immediately press and hold the Shift keyas your Mac starts up.
2. Release the key when you see the login window, then log in to your Mac.
3. You might be asked to log in again. On either the first or second login window, you should see ”Safe Boot” in the upper-right corner of the window.

Best Regards.
