FCPX - Audio and Video separate tracks

I've pasted "Audio" only onto a timeline, and when I add a "B" roll above it, I can't apply transitions to the video; it want's to go onto the audio timeline.

I created another project and built out the video only on the timeline and copied and pasted the audio from the other project into it, and moving it below the video, it's locked into the video whereas if I shorten a clip, the audio gets split/moved down along with it.

How do you edit an audio timeline (?), and then add video on top and be able to edit them both separately?

Do follow these tutorials, as terryb suggested. Just as he said, they will save you a lot of time and headaches.

On the subject at hand: if you are doing something to audio, like a music clip, you are starting the right way, by putting audio in the primary timeline.

To get the video above to behave in a magnetic way, just like the primary, all you have to do is making it a secondary storyline.

The trouble you're running into is a fundamental FCP editing model that uses a magnetic timeline, connected clips and lanes not tracks.

To change the default behavior of the magnetic timeline and move a clip, press the P key to change to Position mode.

These excellent tutorials will save you many hours of frustration while you're learning FCP.
