sound while using phone app

From time to time the sound become disabled for incoming calls and on the dialing pad when inputting a number to call. The side volume is one max. I have not intentionally done this, maybe it is happening with some combination of touches on the phone or pushing side buttons. Any help is appreciated?

mballew8,

Were you able to determine if this issue is related to any particular contacts? Or does it only happen with unknown callers? Here is some additional information which may help with isolating what's happening.

  1. Check for Keyboard feedback at Settings > Sounds & Haptics > Keyboard Feedback > Verify "Sound" is selected. (Instructions are for the most recent iPhone models)
  2. Verify if side Mute switch is enabled unintentionally when this happens. If you hear no sound or distorted sound from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch speaker - Apple Support
  3. Check Ringtone at Settings > Sound & Haptics > Ringtone > Change the assigned ringtone to another for testing. *If the tone being used is a song, verify that it's downloaded to your iPhone in the Music app > Library > Downloaded.
  4. If only certain contacts are having the issue, verify if there is an assigned ringtone showing in the Contacts app for those callers. If so, change it to test, and if a song, verify it's downloaded.
  5. If the issue is only unknown callers, verify if "Silence Unknown Callers" is enabled, as shown in this article: Detect and block spam phone calls - Apple Support

Take care!

Hello mballew8,

Thanks for asking the Apple Support Communities about sounds issues.

First, check if there is a carrier settings update: Manually update your carrier settings on your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

Next, see if you can isolate the times this occurs.

1 . Is it in specific areas or locations? Can it be caused by interference? Resolve Wi-Fi and Bluetooth issues caused by wireless interference - Apple Support

2 . Is it specific to when you call certain people, or when they call you, or anyone and everyone?

3 . Are the people you see the issue with Apple users or Android users?

4 . Do the other callers or receivers have issues also?

Thanks.
