Zooming in and out in Google Maps suddenly way too fast!

Google Maps used to work just fine a couple of days ago but suddenly it's almost impossible to zoom in and out accurately.

I only have this problem using the Safari Browser (which I normally use), in Firefox it still works fine.

Any ideas what to do (besides just using Firefox)?

You might try to change User Agent in "Develop menu" in Safari to "Google Chrome - macOS" and it will probably help.

If you do not see "Develop menu" then open Safari's preferences and in the "Advanced" tab check "Show Develop menu in menu bar", then open it, click "User Agent" and select the one I mentioned.

If it is not a Safari problem, then how do you explain what I said before? About two friends with different versions of Safari 15 and perfectly working Google Maps, and that I asked one of them to update to 16, which he did and instantly got this problem.

It is not only fast zoom problem, I mean, not a single person here mentioned that you are actually unable to fully zoom out to see the globe and the Globe View checkbox is unclickable. This definitely has something to do with our original problem.

UPD.

While typing this, I decided to try again and now it is all working fine for me. Safari 16.1

I'm using Safari 16 on an M1 13" MacBook Pro and have the same problem as described by the OP and others. About 2 weeks ago accurately zooming in and out in Google Maps became near impossible. Instead of smooth scaling I go from neighbourhood to city to country to continent to globe. That's a slight exaggeration but not much.

Please fix the bug or give users a workaround.

Same issue over here! Brand new MacBook Pro M1 Max and Google maps on Chrome is nice and smooth zoom scrolling (both with Magic Mouse and with the touch pad), but Google maps in Safari is an absolute mess.

Bummer because it's one of the websites I use most frequently and it's making me re-think using Safari altogether.

Apple, please find a solution. Thank you.

Thank you! I should've thought about it myself. It helped. Weird but good thing is that when I open Google maps now, after changing that setting, it works fine, even though User agent resets to Default again. It didn't work for a brief second but then starts working good.

UPD: While I was typing that message, it stopped working for me at all. Even if change Agent to Chrome. I restarted Safari and now I have problems even with THIS discussion page: it doesn't let me scroll after login in. Changing User agent doesn't help help here. I had to open the real Chrome to type this. God, what the **** is wrong with Safari and we are still using it, despite the fact that there is always some problems?

This reply absolutely nails the issue, nothing more to be said, if you expect us to change settings perhaps you could explain why the issue has suddenly occurred and what was your thinking behind the update that we now need to compensate for when all the update seems to have done is to break something that didn't need fixing. I can only assume this was an unintended side effect unless it's part of a strategy to drive us towards Apple Maps maybe?

I actually tried that but I'm not sure I'm doing it right. Should I somehow "save" that setting in Chrome? I mean, I uncheck "Use browser default", pick Safari 16, but when I close the inspector and open it again, there is default again. So I'm not sure. But when I uncheck it and don't close the inspector, and reload Maps tab, it still works fine. And as I said earlier, changing user agent in Safari is not working for me anymore.
