Blurry pics on iPhone 14 Pro Max (iOS 16.0.2)

I just got the new phone few days ago (for the better cameras compared to 13 Pro Max), and surprisingly the pics quality is blurry!

If I use the main camera when choosing 'vivid' mode, after the pic is taken , it takes 3-4 more seconds to do the post-processing! You can see the pic changing contrast, light etc in 2-3 times during that time interval of 3-4 seconds. The result at the end is not as good as I had with 13 Pro Max - which did the processing WHILE taking the pics and not after...

If I chose the 'standard' mode, the pics are better than in vivid mode, but still if you zoom just a little the details get lost! If you dont zoom, some areas of the pic seem clear and others blurry!

I did everything I could do from my side, cleaned the lens, updated to 16.0.2 as I mention in the title and I dont know what else to do :/

Any help on this please?

Having the same issue, called Apple support. They’re apparently aware of the issue and the software team is notified and “working on the issue”. They also said they’re unable to tell me how long the “fix” software release will be, could be 1 months. Could be 6 months…

also offered me a phone swap but my phone passed all hardware issues so swapping the phone won’t really solve the issue.

I agree with this analysis, the hardware actually has tremendous potential but the software is absolutely butchering the output.

I think Apple is going through a learning curve on tuning the photonic engine to make the best use of the new higher pixel density. The photonic engine was originally developed for 12MP hardware. I think now with all the extra information (more megapixels) the neural ai machine learning yadda yadda algorithm is like l…..what do I do with all of this info?!

FWIW google had a very similar round of issues when some of the Android phones made a huge leap forward in terms of total megapixel count.

I’m just shocked Apple isn’t saying ANYTHING about this issue. Lying by omission

100% with everything you said. Because the app takes such good photos and nothing apple techs have done to “fix” my camera has worked: software. This means if apple does fix the issues, the camera will be GREAT. And going by hardware it should be. But the software is working against it.

I have been reporting, have a case open and have sent photo proof of the poor quality and issues. If everyone in this forum does the same we are increasing the likelihood of apple at the very least addressing the issues.

This is March 2023 but my pics look exactly the same when zoomed in. I am a photographer and always check the sharpness by zooming in. My first iPhone 14 Pro Max from end of 2022 did this. I was offered a new one with the authorization hold until they received mine. Did that and was great until the latest update to 16.3.1. I’m so disappointed. My previous phone was the 12 Pro Max which took amazing photos. My heart still aches because it’s gone. I made a bad decision letting that go. It was paid off but I decided to trade in for a few hundred off the 14PM. I remember the 12PM started with the same exact issue and didn’t get a fix until about a year later. I used Halide until then. Will try that again but this is unacceptable. This is a defect they need to put at the top of the list which should’ve been fixed before being released for sale, or at least within the first month after.

I rang support today too. I told them that I expected an upgrade in purchasing an iPhone 14 max not a downgrade. I sent them a photo of the same object from the 14 and the 12 and he said can you point out what exactly is blurry? I said the whole photo! It’s not sharp, clear etc. I said this is a known issue it’s in blogs, forums and YouTube videos all over the world. Why are you selling phones with defective cameras from the 12 up?? I sent them screenshots of how blurry a QR code I was trying to scan and he asked me to use the code reader and it was even more blurry. All I got was I appreciate your concern and them carrying out diagnostics. My phone was able to capture my debit card on Amazon afterwards though but not QR. I’ve got two expensive phone cases on route and a lens cover. I’ve got an appointment Thursday afternoon at the Apple shop he said I’ll either get a repair, refund or replacement. I don’t think Apple understand the damage they have done to customer confidence we all upgrade every so often expecting good quality and now our trust is gone. No honest YouTubers and comparison sites said anything about the camera issue. I would not have upgraded if I’d known. I’ve got my iPhone 12 in a Jiffy bag ready to sell. I should have posted it today and I’m too scared to. After 18 months the battery has started to go, a charge doesn’t last 24 hours like it used to even though battery health is quite high on checking. I want to stick with Apple but wth?

Thanks for sharing. Did you reset and upgrade again to 16.1 or stayed at 16.0?

Yes indeed, I have seen the same problem in 2-3 other 14 Pro Max ones exposed at Apple store (during my appointment at Genius bar).

Apple store guys don't consider this a problem for swapping the phone. I had my phone checked as well at Genius bar and online from Apple support. What they really check is if 'stuff' works or not and not the performance of it! They did the test in front me and that's what they kind of admitted from our talk.

Same issues!! This is my third iphone 14 pro. It was exchanged by apple two times already due to blurry videos and shaking USING APPLE’S own camera app (not third party apps. Extremely dissatisfied, since my third iphone that I just got two days ago is having the same issues. I followed all the recommendations the genius bar made (remove 3dr party lens cover/protector), installed as new iphone (don t restore), nothing works. I just tested my friend’s 14 pro max and same issue, my wife’s iphone is doing exactly the same, blurred videos. I think it s time for Apple to acknowledge that some phones have HW camera issues

i didn’t notice any of that but just to show you what I mean here is the picture details of two pictures I took with the 12 pro and 14 pro side by side…. Normal photo mode all settings neutral Look at the 14 pro ISO and image size… If I set it to 48 megapixels the image becomes a little better but the ISO is still the same just the file size goes up. In terms of zooming in on the image the 48mp image is definitely better although if the MP is set high and the ISO is up the image result will still be grainy….

here is three results - the last two are the direct comparison and the first is the 48mp image details

Its what Apple support always does. I did the same like twice with them. They run diagnostics and anything seems fine (related to HW at least) and they offer to swap the phone. I didnt swap because also their other iphones that keep on the show stands showed the same problem with pics.

officially Apple doesnt give any statement on this and all you read from bloggers is only camera quality praise (which makes it weird how only some ppl and not everyone have this issue - unless the bloggers are paid to praise, you know 😄)

personally i’d suggest you swap the 14 with an iphone 13. You would be instantly happy eith pics and no need to wait for a fix on 14 from Apple, if a fix will ever arrive ofc .
