Blurry pics on iPhone 14 Pro Max (iOS 16.0.2)

I just got the new phone few days ago (for the better cameras compared to 13 Pro Max), and surprisingly the pics quality is blurry!

If I use the main camera when choosing 'vivid' mode, after the pic is taken , it takes 3-4 more seconds to do the post-processing! You can see the pic changing contrast, light etc in 2-3 times during that time interval of 3-4 seconds. The result at the end is not as good as I had with 13 Pro Max - which did the processing WHILE taking the pics and not after...

If I chose the 'standard' mode, the pics are better than in vivid mode, but still if you zoom just a little the details get lost! If you dont zoom, some areas of the pic seem clear and others blurry!

I did everything I could do from my side, cleaned the lens, updated to 16.0.2 as I mention in the title and I dont know what else to do :/

Any help on this please?

FIXED IT! (Sort of…)

Basically, two things are at play here:

1) Apples Image Processing (and the QUAD PIXEL sensor technology is mostly at fault.)

2) The way the camera’s are programmed by default.

The first issue is the main root of the problem. The quad pixel sensor technology reduces the amount of resolution depending on how much light is needed on the image. Basically: Low light, sensor clusters pixels together to capture as much light as possible, you end up with at 7MP RAW image from the main camera, as opposed to the 48MP expected resolution (happened to me several times now.)

Here is an example of this issue:

The second issue at fault is that , specially for subjects that are closer than 1ft or so, the native camera app at 1x zoom switches from the main camera, to the ultrawide camera because the main camera can focus that close. It’s not too much of a big deal, since most people shoot subjects further away than 1ft. But it’s good to be aware of that.

To fix it (sort of) you unfortunately have to use a 3rd party app like HALIDE to override the software on the camera module and prevent it from doing the QUAD Pixel rubbish that makes a 48MP sensor output a blurry 7MP image. Even in low light, from my experience, HALIDE still provides better looking pictures, that are actually 48MP.

Same here and I’m already on 16.1.1. I’m having the issue using any of the cameras. Nothing seems to really be in focus or sharp even with 58MP. My 12 pro max and XS max also seemed to take much better pics.

Has anyone noticed any differences when taking pictures with flash and without? I haven’t played around much with that yet.

iPhone 14 pro bought for macro pics. Agree that any attempt at digital zooming on camera blurs the image. I downloaded images onto my pc thinking it might be a problem with the iPhone digital zoom. I’ve compared similar downloads images with my iPhone 6S with macro lens adaptor. I can digitally zoom on my PC upto 194% with iPhone 6S and still retain a lot of clarity. The iPhone 14 pro images break up well before 194%.

So my conclusion is there is a fault with the iPhone 14 pro image and isn’t related to the phones digital zoom. I’ve just updated to 6.1.1 as was using 6.0.2 so will take more pics tomorrow As I’m concerned it’s not going to be an easily fixable software update if no improvement tomorrow then phone is going back for a refund. Will update tomorrow.

Will try vibrant mode.

just found out that when when using the x1,x2 & x3 zoom in macro mode then a digital zoom is applied. May explain why when trying to zoom the pic it’s becomes blurred? I will try using the 0.5 setting as no digital zoom is applied but this doesn’t display the macro symbol?

Hello all, wish I had better news to report, but I do know that exchanging your phone won’t help this issue. This is a software issue and not hardware related. I found that on the blurry photos, if I open in google photos and edit, it fixes the blur issues. This is the first time in a long time that Apple has updated their camera and I believe it’s just taking longer then usual to fix the software. Fingers cross this gets fixed in a future beta. But at least for now I can fix my blurry portraits using google photos lol

Sure, just download google photos and make sure you are synced up. When you take a photo, go into google photos and hit edit. You can now adjust blur and tap to focus where you’d like. All of the info was captured correctly by the camera but scuffed by the software. This is why Google photos can fix it. So I’m really hoping for a software fixed soon.

Same for me! My videos on 3x telephoto cam is blurry specially on Cinematic, Slow-mo, and time laps. I chatted with apple support, they did an online diagnostic and told me that there wasn’t any HW problem. Im using 16.1 version. There isn’t any official apple store where I live! Since the photos on 3x are good, I hope that it is a SW problem :(

Hi everyone. Can’t believe i’m saying this but i upgraded from an iPhone 8 plus and that phone took way better picture than my new iphone 14 pro!!! At first i couldn’t understand, i thought maybe i was doing something wrong but after 2 weeks taking pictures i can confirm it. It sucks! I’m on ios 16.1.2 and the problem stil persists! This is incredible… now what am i supposed to do?? I live in Argentina and i can’t even take to an Apple Store because there are none in my country.

Same on my 14 Pro - my 12 Pro took better pics than this phone. Really makes me mad as the increased megapixels were supposed to be a big improvement. I went to the Apple Store and compared another as well and it’s all the same. I hope the fix for the camera comes sooner than later - very disappointing considering how much money this new phone cost!
