iPhone text notification dings very loudly in my ear while on the phone

I just migrated from android and bought the iPhone 14 Pro Max. I love the phone and can’t believe I didn’t switch earlier! Most everything is the way I like it, except yesterday, while I was talking on the phone with it to my ear, a text message came in and the ding notification was super loud in my ear. It was the same loudness as if the phone was sitting on my desk and I got a text message notification. That can’t be right. Not in my ear while I am talking on the phone! I can’t figure out how to mute the ding or reduce its intensity while actively talking with somebody. When I had my android and I was on the phone and got a text message, I just heard a little blip and felt a little vibration to alert me a message had come in. Thank you for any help.

My wife found a solution for this annoying piercing text sound. It seams that Apple has changed the default sound for a text from what it used to be. If you go to settings - Sounds & Haptics, then go down to “Sounds and Haptic Patters” , you will see next to the Text Tone the selection being “Note”.

Click on that and go down to Classic and then select “Tri-Tone”. This is what it used to be. Once you change it to “Tri-Tone” it won’t make that piercing painful sound while on a phone call.

I’m attaching a picture of how it is and how it should be once you change it. Good luck everyone!

Yes, I experienced this too, and my ear is still ringing and hurts. Especially, since I received one notification sound, followed by another one in 30 seconds from someone else. Something definitely is not right, but I did alleviate at someone with a Focus.

Using the focus, I was able to set the focus to come on when using the phone app and not allowing any one to do a notification with the messages, mail and outlook apps.

It would be nice if they had a phone icon for use on the focus, but I settled on the text message icon.

This really needs to be fixed!!!

Hi AuthorizedUser525,

Thank you for posting in Apple Support Communities! The audible notification sound can be heard on a call but should not be as loud as when the device is not in use. Since noticing this, has your iPhone been restarted? Restart our device can help resolve many random issues we may face with our devices.

To restart:

1. Press and hold either volume button and the side button until the power off slider appears.

2. Drag the slider and wait about 30 seconds.

3. Press and hold the side button until the Apple logo appears to power it back on. Once back on, test to see if this continues.

Hope that helps!

AuthorizedUser525,

Thank you for this information. The sound should lower when you are on a call. Restarting was to allow the phone to reset some of the settings. If you are still having the issues with the notifications alerts being too loud when on a call, we would recommend you contact Apple Support directly for more specific assistance with this issue.

Regards.

Because of this issue i just escaped from an accident!!!

I've been at the Apple Store for the last 3 months getting a Genius Bar they replaced my display after the issue was still persist and finally they have given me a replacement on that also the same issue was there...and they also don't know how to fix it. whenever i am calling to apple support they are saying that the issue will resolve on the next update and i was waiting for 16.1 now its running 16.2.

Feedback and Genius Bar have not solved the issue so far. The only "fix" is to remember to manually turn the mute switch on and off every time those of us with an issue want to make or receive a call? I understand problems like this can arise, but this is not an inexpensive device and, if you've experienced it, you may not understand how blaring the notification is in the user's ear. It's not a minor inconvenience we're discussing. It can leave your ear ringing when it unexpectedly comes through the speaker.

If a user with this problem forgets to manually engage the mute switch before and after receiving or making a call it hurts, but this would need to be demonstrated in person. I'm going to make another Genius Bar appointment and see if I can get further than "wait for the next update" again and again.

Thank you for taking the time to try to provide an acceptable workaround and your suggestion of letting Apple know I would like them to fix this problem.
