iPhone text notification dings very loudly in my ear while on the phone

I just migrated from android and bought the iPhone 14 Pro Max. I love the phone and can’t believe I didn’t switch earlier! Most everything is the way I like it, except yesterday, while I was talking on the phone with it to my ear, a text message came in and the ding notification was super loud in my ear. It was the same loudness as if the phone was sitting on my desk and I got a text message notification. That can’t be right. Not in my ear while I am talking on the phone! I can’t figure out how to mute the ding or reduce its intensity while actively talking with somebody. When I had my android and I was on the phone and got a text message, I just heard a little blip and felt a little vibration to alert me a message had come in. Thank you for any help.

My wife found a solution for this annoying piercing text sound. It seams that Apple has changed the default sound for a text from what it used to be. If you go to settings - Sounds & Haptics, then go down to “Sounds and Haptic Patters” , you will see next to the Text Tone the selection being “Note”.

Click on that and go down to Classic and then select “Tri-Tone”. This is what it used to be. Once you change it to “Tri-Tone” it won’t make that piercing painful sound while on a phone call.

I’m attaching a picture of how it is and how it should be once you change it. Good luck everyone!

by the way, I’m not sure if you guys realize this or not, but it only affects the pro series of the iPhone 14. iPhone, 14 Pro and Pro Max both have the notch and both have this issue. I don’t know if the notch has anything to do with the issue but the regular iPhone 14s don’t have this problem. When I upgraded, I got the iPhone 14 for my kids and I got myself the iPhone 14 promax and the iPhone 14 does not have this issue. I’ve tested on my kids phones.

were you able to configure it in a way where its automatic from when you answer the phone its on focus and off when you hang up? Mine seems to think after configuration once I answer the phone I still need to click on the phone app for it register. Hope I am making sense. Hate putting my phone on silence for all calls because I forget and leave it on for the rest of the day..

You have to make sure smart activation is on and set to activate when using the phone app. I tested it multiple times with different people in my family calling the phone and it works. Will not shut off until you close phone app or go to home or another app. Essentially, putting the phone app into the background.

It would be a lot easier if Apple would just drop the volume by 90% for the notification when using the phone. I can’t believe this made it by beta testing.

Apple will never fix this problem. Apple engineers are not stupid. They know the problem exists but they can’t be bothered to fix it because they are too busy working on the next money printing machine called the iPhone 15. They don’t care about customer service. They just care about making money.

we miss you, Steve Jobs. If he was alive, he never would’ve let anyone at Apple get away with this. If Steve Jobs was alive, this would’ve been fixed three days after the first person reported it.

This is STILL an issue with both mine and my husband’s iPhone 14s. Absolutely horrible and painful in my ear! Has been an issue since “upgrading” to this phone. My ear has literally had tinnitus after a loud ding. I’ve done every update and restarted multiple times with no change. Programmers really need to fix this. This phone has all sorts of weird problems. Another is often when I open camera to video mode, the screen flashes every second or so and doesn’t stop and won’t record.

YES YES YES Please Apple devs read this post!! This is a serious issue with many iPhone models, not just the original poster’s 14 pro max. I have a 13 and XS Max and it is problematic on both of them as well. During a phone call alert tones should automatically silence. The alert can be so loud when it happens during a phone call that it physically hurts my ear and has made my ear have a hissing sound for a few minutes afterward. Seems like a simple software update should be able to mute audible alerts from coming through the earpiece speaker during a phone call.

And to confirm, I have the most recent up to date iOS on both of my devices. This issue has persisted through numerous iOS versions up to the most current.
