imac is turning off but not waking up

Any idea why my iMac is turning off, but will not wake up with either the mouse or the power button on the back? I have to turn off and on my surge protector strip to have the computer come up. This only started happening recently. Thank you.

By turning off do you mean actually shutting down and can't boot up unless you turn off the power supper? If that's the case then you have a failing power supply.

Next time it shuts down, upload the power cable from the back of the iMac for about 15 seconds. Plug it back in and try booting up. If that's successfull then the premise of a failing power supply has been verified.
