AOL app password GENERATOR no longer working - 10-9-2022 and earlier

I know I'm not alone here based on previous Community Q & A. As others have discovered the use of an AOL App password (designed for "better security") is NO LONGER WORKING AS OF Oct 9, 2022. Various AOL accounts (which include the original @verizon.net email dumped by Verizon a few years ago) will fail to obtain an "App Password" - needed typically when setting up or resetting up an AOL account that has been placed under this security requirement. As of 10-9-2022 the AOL technicians I've spoken to (I'm using the word "technician" very loosely here) ARE NOW admitting that it is a known problem that they "are working on". Foolishly I asked for an ETA on the password FIX and was told "just keep checking back every once in a while!" From what I see when I Google the problem or look at the Apple Community - the "FIX" is already a few months in the works. Advice? Perhaps go to your AOL account and ATTEMPT to turn off "App-Specific passwords to be entered instead of your normal password". Rest in Next.

Hey everyone after months of dealing with this I finally was able to get the password. I was able to access the password generator through the Microsoft edge browser. Knock on wood but it literally works every time I use it with Edge. To be clear I’m using the Edge app from the IOS App Store on an iPhone 14 pro max. Don’t know if any of those details matter but I want to make sure you have all the info on the table. Good luck!

I've been having problems with just 1 out of my 3 Verizon.net email addresses since 11/15/2022. I use Outlook 2019 on my desktop PC and I know none of the settings were changed by me or my system, since my 2 other email addresses are sending and receiving emails fine.

Calling AOL's customer support wasn't helpful, but I did read on this thread that some people randomly went in to "generate password" and have gotten it to work successfully, where others had no luck. So I tried it earlier tonight (8:45pm EST on 11/24/2022) and it successfully generated one for me!! Eventually I figured out where in Outlook I had to go in to put this generated password (I knew what the screen looked like but couldn't remember where in Outlook I had to go into in order to put this one. Once I found it, I pasted the copied generated password and clicked thru the steps, and Outlook finally downloaded all the emails that I hadn't gotten since 11/15.

So I guess my best advice is to try the "Generate Password" randomly every so often. Hopefully it'll eventually work for you.

Thanks for everyone's help here. You guys/gals are great!!

From AOL Twatter support

”We're very sorry app passwords are unavailable for your account. We don't have an exact ETA on when this will return, but we encourage you to check back in the near future. Rest assured, you can still access your mail from the AOL Mail app or via a web browser. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause you.”

I've having the same problem as you all after upgrading to an iPhone 14 Pro Max and having to sign all of my emails into the Spark app again that I use to have all my mail in one place. I've been going back and checking every once and a while and still getting the message when trying to generate the password. As of approx. 5 minutes ago (11:17pm est) I was able to actually get a password generated!! It worked!! I went to the AOL website via safari on my phone then navigated to the generate password page and was able to get one! (Also please don't hold my username against me. It is in fact the majority of the AOL email address in question that I made in 6th grade lol) It should be evident now how important this AOL email situation has been to me haha

to Stevecfalls and others - As some others have reported - there have been intermittent successes in obtaining the cursed AOL AP passwords. BUT for yesterday eve (Nov 30) and thus far today (Nov 31) the Ap generating AOL password creation has been working! May be ephemeral but sometimes the AOL gods (devils?) smile down on those here on earth who have been frustrated.

So I get an app password for one account but get the error message for the other. so when i tried using this fix by getting the password through edge, i was surprised it worked like a charm. so, clearly, the problem is using chrome. i'll never figure out why. another workaround for outlook users is to set up a Google account, have your verizon mail sent there and then forward to Outlook. one benefit is google filters out the crap better than outlook. good luck!

After 1 month of torture, the AOL App Generator stared working yesterday. I'm signed up for a Microsoft Community that was following this problem. A guy said his started working so I jumped on AOL and a miracle happened, it worked.

We out here in the cold can only speculate as to why this is happening. I spoke to a Microsoft help center person last night. He's been dealing with this issue for months as you can well imagine. He said that Microsoft Developers were in talks with Apollo as this was fast becoming a big issue for the support desk. He said they started working, hit and miss, about a week ago. So we'll see if this fix stays. I rather doubt it. I'm thinking of ways to protect my app passwords and might generate a few more (and print them out) to use on future PCs.

Bottom line, each day check your AOL or Yahoo account and see if the app password generator is working. One day, you might find, it does.

Just got off the phone with them and they know exactly what is going on . Tried to bull me into a browser issue . Set up a new address on outlook.com forwarded my old address over and will get rid of them in the next few months . Tired of their bull and problems as I have had issues in the past as well . Time to move ! Let them charge and make it a pay per service with monthly recurring revenue like the other services ! CYA !

Marymini - rest assured your feelings & frustration (and maybe rage?) are shared by those of us affected. I received a reply from Merlin021 on this thread that may be work-around for some. Merlin writes:

[I will] Set up a new address on outlook.com forwarding my old address over and will get rid

of them [AOL] in the next few months . Tired of their bull and problems as I have had

issues in the past as well".

BTW - I wouldn't expect ANY help from VERIZON as the old VERIZON.com addresses were transferred (sold?) to AOL seveal years ago and now reside on AOL servers. AOL may have recently re-sold them to yet another 3rd party! I recall that when this happened, Verizon sent notices to all of us verizon.net email users requiring us to transfer any/all of their verizon email accounts to AOL - if we wished to maintain our original identification/name as verizon.net - there was a deadline to do this after which you lost the ability to do so.

My wife got a new laptop and I was setting up Outlook 365 and I need the AOL generated app-password. I didn't have it written down, nor did the AOL website show the generated password original created on January 2022. I tried everything from generating a new password (which we all know doesn't work). I found a program mailpv (Mail PassView) from Nirsoft.net. It has 2 low-level viruses which I decide it was more important to retrieve the previous generated AOL Outlook password since I was running the progrm on the old PC. It worked great giving me the password, I entered it into the Outlook setup on the new PC and Bam, all the emails came in.

FINALLY it magically worked! Kept trying all browsers and finally yesterday, to my total surprise, it woked twice on Edge of all places. I never use edge but, like everyone else, was desperate.

Got my AOL email added to Outlook for both of my computers. Just try edge, it may work for you too although it had not worked on Edge before and, yesterday, it still didn't work on Firefox or Chrome, just Edge! AH such a relief it is :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)
