Accurate step tracking with Apple Watch, without arm swinging??

Hello,

I'm thinking about buying my first Apple Watch. But I am afraid that it will have the same issue as my FitBit Inspire 2, in that it won't track steps accurately from my wrist unless my wrist is swinging while I walk.

Because I'm old and I want credit for every step I take, I have been keeping my FitBit in my pocket on the Clip setting because when I do my almost-daily 2.5 mile walks on the treadmill, I hold onto the bars for dear life (I am 66 years old). I also do not swing my arm when I push grocery carts, nor when I push the lawn mower (and we have a large yard).

I just came from a store and was asking the Apple salesman there about this. He found an Apple support group online where someone said they tested their Apple Watch, and the step count was accurate whether they swung their arm or held it still? Does anyone have any information about this?

Thank you!

If you are outside and the watch is connected to GPS satellites it will estimate your steps based upon your distance and your normal stride. This will not work when you are on the treadmill as you don't actually cover any distance. I'm 71 and I don't hold onto the rails but I actually don't pay any attention to steps on my watch at all. Even though fieryjack's boilerplate didn't address your actual question he actually gave you a hint as to how to use your watch, on your treadmill pay attention to Move and Exercise rings and ignore how many steps you are taking. Apple deprecates the counting of steps as it isn't really a medical measurement. 10K steps per day actually came from a Japanese pedometer company that was mounting a sales campaign.
