CarPlay Black Screen with ios 16 update

Since I updated my phone, I discovered that car play does NOT connect when I’m connected to a VPN server. this worked for me and I think it should work for more people:

1.) unplug my phone from the car

2.) disconnect VPN

3.) connect phone to car (i.e. USB/C-cable)

4.) VOILA

If CarPlay is not working as expected, you can follow the additional troubleshooting steps in If you need help with CarPlay:

"Make sure that your iPhone has the latest version of iOS. If your iPhone is updated to the latest version of iOS, follow these steps — checking CarPlay after each step:

1. Check your connection to your CarPlay stereo:

• If you have a wired connection, try connecting again with a different USB cable to a different USB port if you have one.
• If you have a wireless connection, make sure that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled under Settings > Wi-Fi and Settings > Bluetooth.

2. If CarPlay doesn't activate automatically, look for the CarPlay logo on your car's display.

3. Restart your iPhone and your car. 

4. Make sure that Siri is on.

5. If your iPhone isn't detected by CarPlay, make sure that CarPlay isn't restricted. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions, tap Allowed Apps and make sure that CarPlay is enabled.

6. Go to Settings > General > CarPlay, tap your car, then tap Forget This Car. Then set up CarPlay again.

7. Make sure that your CarPlay stereo is using the latest firmware from the car manufacturer. Check your car's manual for more information.

Go to settings<Screen Time<Content & Privacy Restrictions and make sure that is turned on and that Carplay is an approved app. Mine got turned off I'm assuming with the update and as soon as I turned it on it worked.

I had this problem and after a lot of trouble shooting I discovered that my vpn application i was running on my phone was causing the issue. If you are running a vpn disable and reconnect and see if that works. Good luck!

I have the Volvo xc60 recharge - CarPlay was a blank /black screen all week. Just got off phone with tech support. Hold the oval home button down and do not release as the system “cleans” and reboots. It took a minute or longer of holding button but then Home Screen reappeared and apply CarPlay was back!

Thank you genseric , this definitely worked for me after trying everything else , like reset , vpn, ( do make sure siri is enabled- but it tells you this anyway) which didn't work.

screen is back to normal . I m on the latest IOS 16.5.1

on iphone- settings / google maps / enable location and mobile data /leave everything else unclicked.

Somehow a restart of iphone solved the black screen glitch.

I got the same issue with my Merc W205 C200 with Iphone 14 pro with 16.1 but when it got updated to 16.2 issue went off.

I’ve had similar issues I found it out to be my VPN on my phone. Turned it off problem Solved turn it back on black screen.

CarPlay black screen issue resolved. This was happening on Google Maps. Go to Settings/Google Maps, unclick all but cellular data and continue using location, screen went from black to normal.

Just upgraded to 16.1 and it’s now connecting again, so that’s good news, we’ll see if it sticks

Resetting by cycling power on my iPhone 11 Pro Max with IOS 16.1.1 resolved the Apple Car Play dark screen on my 2019 Audi Q5.
