CarPlay Black Screen with ios 16 update

Hi - since upgrading an iphone 12 max to ios 16 I have been getting a black screen when plugging in and selecting carplay. The carplay icon appears on the infotainment unit but when it is selected it goes black and there's nothing thru the system. I downgraded to ios15 again and it worked for a while but then randomly got the black screen again - upgraded to 16.0.2 and same.

I've deleted all the profiles in carplay, checked siri, checked usb connection is active but nothing seems to work.

Any ideas?

Since I updated my phone, I discovered that car play does NOT connect when I’m connected to a VPN server. this worked for me and I think it should work for more people:

1.) unplug my phone from the car

2.) disconnect VPN

3.) connect phone to car (i.e. USB/C-cable)

4.) VOILA

Yeah, this happened to me too. I fix it by restarting my phone. I don’t think it has to do with the iOS version so much as just rebooting your iPhone.

I can make the black screen disappear by opening the Audacy app on my phone then selecting the station I want to listen to. It’s a extra step I don’t want to do but it works. Audacy then works fine until I turn the car off. The next time I want to use Audacy I get the black screen on CarPlay and I have to go through the process again.

I turned my phone off and back on and it works just fine now. Everything back to normal!

My CarPlay display went to black screen while I was trying to screen mirror my phone. I tried updating my phone and then restarted it, CarPlay screen came back on. It can be I either had to update my phone or restart the phone for it to go back to normal. Either way, I’m just glad I got my CarPlay display back on the screen. Hope this helps.

Actually - the post above didn't work. Went black screen again today with no update to the phone - completely random. Tried to reset the infotainment and wouldn't work. I guess it needs a full phone reset again.

Still think this is a problem. I can confirm I have had this only in the last 2 weeks but on ios 15 and 16 on all versions and it's intermittent.

It appears there is a recent article revealing a dispute between what Apple Carplay can display and what Mercedes doesn't want Apple to have control of. My glc300 screen went black also. The phone will still connect, but no display. This is Mercedes fault.

2017 Panamera here, mine has been working without issue on all my cars and only started having issues in the last few weeks. As others have pointed out this might be since I upgraded to 16.0.3, I’ve done all of the above from erasing settings, removing devices from car, removing car from CarPlay, switching cables. I even upgraded from an iPhone 12 Pro Max to 14 Pro Max in the same period, black screen before and after.

i thought it was the car but it seems to work intermittently on our 2017 Audi Q7.

16.1 is out now, I’ll try upgrading and report back.

I drive a e39 bmw 530i with an after market slink apple carplay stereo it’s pretty standard, I use my iPhone 14 to connect, it was working perfectly last night. Then this morning and when I tried to connect, it connected and I heard my music but the screen was stuck in the connecting screen and then just went play with my music still playing. There is an update for iOS 16.2 so I’ll try updating to that and see if it works. This is my first time ever having this issue

Mine was working today and I stopped playing music and it went black. I tried rebooting phone. I’ve tried multiple cords. I’ve tried multiple devices. We all have 16.3.1 on iPhone 13 This is in a Honda 2022 crv

I see this and then it goes completely black.

Mine was working Fine until updating to 16.0.3 that gave me a black screen in the car display

Sadly, there is no update for my infotainment system, so even if there was a discpute involving Chevvy, I doubty that would cause the problem in my case.

I reset the phone and tried again and now that solution doesn't work.

The only apps I use with Carplay that aren't "standard" is waze and spotify - so unless there is some compatibility issue with those then I have no idea

Kind of out of options now.

I have been experiencing this same issue for the last week or so with black screen, although on right hand side of screen I can see the last 3 apps used on CarPlay. I’m just updating to iOS16.2 to see if that resolves.

Only some of my icons are blacked out in CarPlay… Audible and Text icons. If using split screen the Audible shows there.

thought maybe I could do a fix before calling dealer.

this Is in my 2022 Rogue.
