iMessage, random grey dot/period

For just one of my contacts, I noticed one outgoing (from me) and one incoming( to me) has what looks like a period below and above the message. What is this?

iPhone 11, iOS 15

Hello Coppsjen,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities.

It looks like you're having an issue with one specific contact in Messages. We can understand wanting to find a fix. Since the issue is relates to just the one contact, try deleting the contact and tying to add it again. Does this help to resolve the issue?

Next, try to quit and reopen the Messages app. Here's a guide to help: Quit and reopen an app on iPhone. If an app isn't responding correctly, this step will typically correct the issue.

Restart your iPhone - Apple Support. We know this sounds like a simple step, but sometimes a fresh restart can correct unusual behavior that pops up.

Also, make sure that your device has all of the latest software features and enhancements. The update process can frequently address unexpected software behavior. The latest version of iOS is 16.0.3 for iPhone 8 and later. Here's a guide to help: Update your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support.

We hope this information helps you out.

Kind regards!
