Mail - how do you stop making a numbered list

I created an email with a paragraph followed by a nested numbered list. The numbering continues even if I try to Command [. I've tried as many combinations of keys, double returns, but I can't stop the numeric list.

I had to make a new email with blank lines then inserted the numbered list between SMH

Mac Mail types Predictive Text for me before I type them. Ever since I upgraded to 14.0 my mac mail thinks it knows better than I do what word I'm about to write. Sometimes it changes 3 times when it sees that it is not the word I'm going for. It shows up in light gray and it's driving me crazy. I think it's called Predictive Text and I don't like it. Email app is displaying the email incorrectly as I type. Earlier today, I updated to Sonoma 14.3, and it never happened before. It is happening the first time I've used the Mail app after updating. Here's a detailed description of what I'm noticing: As I'm writing an email in the Apple Mail app, it appears to be changing my message as I write it. Portions of the message are replaced with text that is copied from earlier in the email. A single line will be replaced with a line that came much earlier in the message. If I copy and past the full text, it will paste correctly with no issues. It's just in how the message is being displayed in app. If I keep typing, the error glitches badly back and forth between the correct text and the duplicated text. I'm on a MacBook Pro 2023 with the M2 chip.

Backspace over the automatically generated number should do it.

FWIW, hitting Return twice after the last numbered item works for me.
