Mail app view settings

Hello All -

How do I change settings for the Mail app, so it shows me the "top layer" or "front page" of the app EVERY TIME - as shown below (accounts intentionally blurred)? Presently, the app persists in taking me to whichever of my email accounts IT decides I want to see - even when I have no unread emails there, and several unread emails in another. It does this for WEEKS or MONTHS at a time, then randomly switches to another mail account, and then sometimes/randomly switches back to my preferred "master" or "front page." I can find NO setting to specify this preference and, quite honestly, don't appreciate Apple assuming it knows better than me which mail account I want to see.

It used to be related to my default email account, where the app persisted in taking me to that account each time. Then it started taking me to whatever email account I last opened, instead. So I quit using the app entirely for many months, hoping this might reset the app's algorithm. Sure enough, it FINALLY started letting me consistently see the "top layer" or "Front Page" again. Note: To this day, I haven't opened, read, or sent a SINGLE EMAIL on the iPhone 11 I've had for some time now, for fear it will once again throw off the app's algorithm and begin taking me to a specific email account. Not a single one. So how did algorithm respond this week? It has, without ANY PROMPTING, started redirecting me to a specific email account again. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why does Apple persist in "thinking" for me, and how do I make it stop???

Thanks! Except, that's exactly what's NOT happening. I have literally NEVER opened an email on my current iPhone. When I receive a new email Notification, I naviagate only to the "top layer" or "front page" of the app to see which account has the new message - and NO farther. I use my desktop PC, iPad, or laptop to actually read/respond to the new email. By the very logic you stated, "where you last left off" IS the "top layer" or "front page" of the app.

So why then, does Apple / Mail app persist in directing me places I do not want to go? Yes, it's a minor inconvenience which is easily overcome. This, however, is a matter of principle. I want to understand why Apple / Mail app believes it knows better than me, and has the authority to decide on my behalf where I'll go, what I'll do, what email account I'll use, etc... Why can't Apple / Mail app just leave me in peace, and allow ME to decide what works best for me, instead of shoving their algorithm down my throat? I want to see the "top layer" or "front page" of the app - and NOTHING MORE!!!
