Unable to use Dell TB16 Docking Station with M2 MacBook Air
Hi Peeps.
I have a M2 MBA and was recently given a Dell TB16 docking station. The M2 MBA and TB16 both support Thunderbolt 3 (see attached specs table for the TB16), but I just cannot get the TB16 to work with an external display.
When I plug the TB16 into the MBA (either of the MBA's USB-C/thunderbolt ports), the MBA is powered by the TB16 and all the USB ports on the TB16 work, as well as the ethernet port. However, the TB16's 3.5 mm audio jacks (front and rear) don't work, and I cannot get video output to an external display via any of the TB16's video output options (DP, HDMI, MiniDP, VGA). I've tried outputting to a Dell external monitor by DP > DP, HDMI > HDMI and Mini DP > HDMI, but nothing works. I also tried outputting to a different small monitor by HDMI > HDMI and VGA > micro USB but that doesn't work either.
When the TB16 is plugged into a Dell XPS 13 (which is also Thunderbolt 3), everything works fine and the XPS is able to output to both of the external monitors connected to the TB16 via DP > DP, miniDP > HDMI, and HDMI > HDMI.
I note that when plugged into the XPS, the TB16's thunderbolt connector has a white LED that lights up, whereas when plugged into my MBA, it does not light up.
At work I have a different Dell docking station, a newer WD19TBS, but it's also Thunderbolt 3 and it works perfectly fine with the M2 MBA in that it outputs just fine to my Dell monitor (which is actually the same model monitor as I have at home).
So I'm stumped as to why the TB16 won't also work with my M2 MBA. The only possible explanation I can come up with is that I have been unable to update the firmware on the TB16 (every time I try the update process using the Dell XPS the update process fails).
Any insight would be greatly appreciated.
