Apple Maps straight line distance

how do I stop my Apple Maps from giving me initially the straight line distance as opposed to driving distance? It’s quite frustrating. Say I am searching for a family member that is through find my iPhone. It says her initial distance in Dallas is 800 something miles but then when you click on it, it gives the driving distance of over 1000 miles. Clearly I am not flying across the sky to get there. Why does it do this? And can I change it?

What other way is there to present this information? A direct line between two points is a constant distance; a journey distance differs with every choice made for the journey - avoid toll roads, don't use highways, etc.

If you touch on the blue Directions button for a route your iPhone will offer several routes, all of them with slightly different distances. Remember too that the fastest route isn't necessarily the shortest.
