Pages for High Sierra

I have just upgrade to High Sierra. There are reasons I cannot upgrade further at the moment.

App Store shows my previous purchases of Pages, Numbers, KeyNote but it will not let me download the updates. I have tried many times to download the updates and sometimes it opens a screen asking for the serial number which is 6 blocks of 4 alphanumeric characters. Unfortunately I once entered this into my database and the last character is missing, so my serial is incomplete. Is it anywhere within the apps? There is an option to purchase it, which I'm willing to do, but that tells me I need a newer OS.

Numbers & KeyNote appear to work under High Sierra, but Pages crashes and I need it.

MacOS High Sierra is compatible with Pages v7.3 thru v8.1. Assuming that you have a backup of Pages v5.6.2 on a disk not connected to your Mac, move that application from your Applications folder to the Trash and empty the Trash.

Launch the Mac App Store and sign in with the same Apple ID that you used when installing Pages v5.6.2. Press the option key and click on the Purchases tab. There should be a button to install or upgrade next to Pages on that panel. Click that.

You will likely receive two dialogs. Do not click Cancel on either. 1) you need a newer version of macOS to install Pages, and 2) install the last compatible version of Pages for High Sierra. When that second dialog is done, you should have Pages v8.1 in your /Applications folder.

What version of Pages is this on High Sierra? Single-click the application and press option+cmd+i.

No version of Pages should be prompting you for a serial number because there are no Apple license servers running that could verify it. Do you have a trial version of Pages '09 and clicked the purchase menu item? What you describe for a license prompt sounds like MS Word.

There is no compatible version of Pages available for download to High Sierra directly from the Mac App Store as the current version (12.1) requires macOS Big Sur or later.

In my own experience, I had Numbers v6.1 installed on High Sierra 10.13.6, and when I pressed the option key + clicked the Purchased panel, the Numbers entry showed an Update button. When I clicked that, I received a dialog that said I could not get the current version of Numbers, but an older version is available. When I clicked that dialog, it just kept presenting the same dialog. When I removed Numbers v6.1 from my Mac, then it finally performed the download and I had Numbers v6.1 again.

In your case, I would exit the Mac App Store, and reboot your Mac. It is not necessary to remove any of the iWork '08 or '09 applications, but do ensure that Keynote installed in the /Applications folder is removed from your Mac, and not parked in your Trash bin. Then, relaunch the Mac App Store, sign in with your Apple ID, and press the option key while you click the Purchased tab. Click the Keynote Update button, and see if there is a different outcome with the last compatible Keynote version installed.

Apple disabled their iWork '09 license servers in the Fall of 2013 when they retired the application suite. The iWork '09 product was not free in the past, and there is no means to license it after that 2013 timeframe. You may have a trial version of the iWork '09 DVD which would time out, and I believe it has a menu item to purchase iWork '09, which as you see, cannot be done now.

I can't help further. Contact Apple Support.

Thanks again Viking,

I had removed Numbers.app, Pages.app and Keynote.app from the Applications folder and also removed keynote.app from the 2 subfolders, even before I wrote my last message.

Logging-out & in has changed things and the purchased apps list is different. It still offers to install Keynote, but goes through the same loop as before.

It now offers Open for Pages & Numbers but wants to open Numbers `09 v. 2.3 (I was using 3.6.2 before upgrading) and Pages ´09 v.4.3 (I was using a more recent one as the icon was newer). Those are the versions in the sub-folder iWork ´09 in the applications directory. So it’s finding those.

I know that files are spread around the system, library, etc. and I see MANY by using the app “Find Any File”. Therefore, I did not want to remove the iWork 08 & iWork 09 subfolders. Maybe that is the only way to get access to a newer version though? Perhaps all 3 apps are linked in some way?

BTW, Pages v.4.3 will not open my existing documents as they are newer and I get the error “index.xml file is missing”. The same is true with my Numbers documents, which I could still open after the upgrade. So basically iWork is dead for me.

I do not know, but would imagine that I cannot just copy my backups of the 3 app files (packages) in the Applications folder and expect them to work?

I have iWork 9.3 Update DMG file in my DMG archive, but I cannot find the 9.0 DMG. I imagine it was downloaded, but in any case I am far away from where my installer DVDs are stored, which is why I keep a DMG archive. Apple handles things differently though. This is a big waste of time. I wish I could just buy it again.

The pages.app in the Applications directory is 5.6.2 and the last one triggered (now it will not open, but just crashes)

There are also the following:

The pages.app in the iWork 08 folder in the Applications directory is 3.0.3

The pages.app in the iWork 09 folder in the Applications directory is 4.3

iWork 09 is the last I recall purchasing and the pages.app in the Apps directory was presumably updated automatically.

So, have we faithful users been left high and dry if we cannot update?

Thanks, but it didn't work. It asked permission to download a compatible version, as the most recent version was not available for this OS. So, I confirmed, but it didn't work.

It opened a VERY old version of Pages, I think from the iWork 08 or iWork 09 folder in the Applications directory. So I then deleted both instances of Keynote from both folders and emptied the trash. I tested with Keynote because I am not currently using it, although it was still working. I was wary of completely removing (even the old versions of) Numbers and Pages from my system. Both were in constant use, but only Numbers and Keynote worked since the upgrade.

So where do we go from here? It's very frustrating. I think the apps cost about $20 each, which I would be willing to pay again, although I don't think I should.

Thanks

Well, I put the original versions of Keynote back into their '08 and '09 subfolders and also put my latest Pages version back into the /Applications folder. Pages still crashes on opening, even in safe mode and even if I add it to the start items. I cannot interpret the start error in the console.

Now in the AppStore when I click open for Keynote, I get a serial number challenge:

As mentioned before, I made a mistake year ago when copying and pasting the original serial number into my filing system. I am missing the last character. I have tried adding all characters from 1-0 and A-Z, but the continue box (missing on the screenshot) is still greyed out.

Any more ideas please?

No, I definitely bought it. It was never expensive and very good value. I have a receipt. App Store obviously recognises that because I had been getting updates until i.e. version 5.6.2 for Pages. Some time ago no more updates were received as I was still using El Capitan.

I normally buy a new MacBook Pro every 2 years, but my last one was 2012 because Apple decided to remove the ports, which is useless (and no longer "Pro") for a constantly travelling media professional who uses lots of external devices. So, since 2012 I would normally have bought 5 new laptops! Sorry it's off topic, but I wanted to say it.

You might not be from Apple, but somebody might read this.

Thanks for your help. Apple doesn't have support where I am.
