Device in Find My-app not updating location

Hi

I have the new AirPods Pro (2nd gen), and I'm trying to find them using Find My. However, in the app they were "Last seen" almost three weeks ago, even though the AirPods and my phone have been with my in my pockets these last weeks.

Why has the location of my AirPods not been updated for all this time? I have granted all permissions to the app, and connected the AirPods to my phone daily.

It seems to me that if the device doesn't update its location regularly, the whole point of the app is... moot?

Thank you for any help.

Hello georghenry,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities!

We want to make sure your location is updating as expected when using the Find My feature with your AirPods Pro.

We can start by verifying that your Find My network setting is enabled at this time:

"Turn on the Find My network

If you turn on the Find My network, you might be able to see the location of your AirPods (3rd generation), AirPods Pro and AirPods Pro (2nd generation), or AirPods Max even if your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch isn't connected to a Wi-Fi or cellular network.

  1. On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, open the Settings app.
  2. Select your name, then select Find My.
  3. Select Find My [device], then turn on Find My [device].
  4. Turn on "Find My network."

If the issue continues, do you have any pending software updates for your devices?

Try restarting your iPhone and then testing again if the issue remains.

We hope this helps to isolate and resolve the issue so the Find My feature is updating for you.

Cheers!

Hi

Thank you for your response, justin_900.

My Find My network setting was enabled. A restart and update to the latest software (I was missing the latest update) did not help with the location of the AirPods.

Luckily, my AirPods have been returned to me, but it was only be removing the pairing to my account and phone and then reconnecting them that I got them to update their last known location. I checked the Apple Support page, and reckoned that getting an alert when leaving my AirPods behind in new location would be helpful, but unfortunately I for some reason don't have that option when I

1. Open the Find My app.
2. Go to the Devices tab, and choose your AirPods.
3. Under Notifications, tap Notify When Left Behind.
4. Turn on Notify When Left Behind.

Maybe this is just a US feature?

Anywho, as mentioned my AirPods have been returned to me, but I would still like to know if Find My ever actually updates the location of my connected devices, so that I can use it to find the AirPods if I lose them again, or just not bother with the disappointment.

Sorry for the snark, and thank you for trying to help - it's just so very annoying when something doesn't seem to work and I can't even figure out why.
