tiny squares popping up on mac

Please help! My MacBook Air is about 2-3 years old and I am a full-time student writing papers and completing assignments on it. These squares started showing up about two months ago and have shown up since then about every week. They do not seem to have any adverse effect on the computer other than being annoying, but I am sure it is my computer crying out for help; I want a second opinion. The squares show up and go away after a minute and are not always in the same spot each time. I had to cross most of this image out for privacy reasons, but the issue is highlighted in the red circle.

It is possible that your notebook has a hardware issue. Could be the GPU, the display, the display cable, or the logic board at fault. Per chance, did your notebook experience a liquid spill recently?

Have you tried running Apple Diagnostics to see if it reports any errors? If this is an Intel-based Mac, you can also try resetting its SMC.
