How to attach one email to a new message on iPadOS

I see lots of folks asking how to do this, but many of those threads are closed. I did several searches in iPadOS help files, but wasn’t successful. It might be there, but if it is, it’s hard to find.

After dinking around a bit, I finally figured out how to do it:

1) Start a new email to which you want to attach another.

2) Press and hold the top of the window until the little pop-up appears with window options.

3) Select the option on the right to move this pending email to a new window floating on top.

4) With your message summary open on the left, glide the new window to the right (it may already be there).

5) Grab the message you want to forward from the summary list by pressing on it and holding. When it starts to float, drag it over the open new window on the right into the message area and hold until you see a Plus (+) sign.

6) Let go - voila! Your message is attached!

Add the finishing touches to your outgoing email in the window and select Send.

To offer some clarification - for the benefit of all…

To attached an existing or received email message to another:

1) When drafting a new email - or replying to a received email - tap the multitasking trigger-button (the three-dot ellipsis button) at the top of the draft message window - to expose the multitasking windowing options:

Tap the second button (split-screen, selecting left or right split) or third button (slide-over) window view. You will now have two visible windows - per you selected view, one of which will be your draft mail message editing window.

2) Using the other window, find the email message in the mailbox folder that you wish to attach to your new/reply email.

Touch-and-hold (i.e., a long touch) the mail message that you wish to attach to your draft mail; as soon as the message “pops” (you may see an action menu), simply drag the message to the insertion point of the draft mail window - and lift your finger.

The email that you dragged to the draft message window will be attached at the insertion point.

3) Finish drafting the email - then send or save the draft mail message as required.

Should you choose to do so, you can return the draft window to full screen or a different view; simply tap the multitasking trigger button (the ellipsis button) at the top of the draft window - then select view that you require from the button-options that you see.

NB: This description obviously applies only to the iPadOS multitasking environment.

To the very best of my knowledge, the ability to attach one email to another - or the procedure to do so - is not described within currently available Apple support documentation or the iPad User Guide.

Apple do invite submission of comments, suggestions and feature requests via its Product Feedback portal. Perhaps a suggestion supporting publication or update of existing documentation to include this information might be appropriate. For iPad and iPadOS:

You are very welcome. I’m always delighted to share knowledge of these excellent devices - in particular iPadOS - and offer help where I can.

I had anticipated merely offering clarification and illustration of the process that I believed that you were attempting to describe. Clearly, this was not the case, but instead offered something new to you - that was perhaps a simpler route to the same outcome 🙂

We are basically using the same method, but yours is simpler to follow - particularly since you included helpful screen shots. Let's hope others find this useful. I couldn't find this procedure in iPadOS help online - is it there?
