Fall detection with Apple Watch

I had a hard fall off my bike which gave a crack in my helmet. The 🆘 didn’t go off as it has done for smaller falls. This was the reason I got the watch for fall detection and when I needed it nothing happened, why?

Hello Elis-cal,

That's a really good question. If the Apple Watch SOS didn't work as expected, we'd verify the following related information:

  • Watch app > Emergency SOS > Fall Detection is enabled and set to Always On.
  • Watch app > Health > Health Details: Height, weight, and age are correct.
  • Watch app > Passcode > Wrist Detection is enabled and working as expected.
  • Watch app > General > Wrist Orientation is set to the correct wrist.
  • Make sure the Apple Watch is on top of your wrist and snug.

At any time, you can manually enable SOS using steps found in: Use Emergency SOS on your Apple Watch - Apple Support

In case you still are unable to get SOS to work properly, then it would be best to contact Apple Support

They'll need to take it from here.

Wishing you well, take care.

Hello Elis-cal,

To help resolve this issue, you may need to Manage Fall Detection on Apple Watch.

If the birthdate you enter when setting up your Apple Watch (or adding it to the Health app on iPhone) indicates that you’re 55 or older, Fall Detection is turned on automatically. If you’re between age 18 and 55, you can turn on Fall Detection manually by doing the following:

1. Open the Settings app  on your Apple Watch.
2. Go to SOS > Fall Detection, then turn on Fall Detection.
You can also open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, tap My Watch, tap Emergency SOS, then turn on Fall Detection.
Note: If you turn off wrist detection, Apple Watch won’t automatically attempt to call emergency services even after it has detected a hard impact fall.
3. Choose “Always on” to have Fall Detection on at all times, or “Only on during workouts” to have Fall Detection on only when you’ve started a workout.
If you’re between age 18 and 55, and setting up a new Apple Watch with watchOS 8.1 or later, Fall Detection during workouts is turned on automatically. If you upgrade your existing Apple Watch from an earlier version of watchOS, you must turn on the feature to detect hard falls only during workouts.

Best Regards.
