apple watch updating/internet issue

I just got an apple watch series 3 and have been trying to connect it to my iPhone and it says the watch needs to be updated but every time it searches for the update I get a message saying it failed to find an update because I'm not connected to the internet but I am. I've tried restarting everything and resetting my network settings and it still doesn't work. I do live in a dorm so I'm not sure if the residential wifi would affect this but I tried this at home and it would go as far as the preparing update screen and would be stuck preparing. I don't know what else to do.

Thanks for reaching out to the Apple Support Communities. Based on the information you've provided, and troubleshooting steps you've gone through, we'd recommend reaching out to Apple Support directly from this link here: Get Support - Apple


From that link you'll want to select Choose a product > Apple Watch > Pairing & Connectivity. From there select Continue, and you should see a few options to reach out, depending on your location.
