Can iPad 10 charge over Lightning using an adapter?

iPad 10 comes with a USB-C to Lightning adapter for pairing and charging Apple Pencil 1st Gen. Does it also work for charging the iPad with an iPad 9 charger? I imagine that charging can work both ways, but I’ve used a type of adapter that wasn’t two-way.

The new iPad10 is supplied with a 20W USB-C Power Adapter. Optimum charging will be achieved using the suppled Power Adapter and the USB-C to USB-C cable.

The USB-C to Lightning adapter is purely intended to provide low-power charging of the Apple Pencil. It makes no sense whatsoever to attempt to charge the iPad using anything other than the correct USB-C cable.
