How can I download photos from iCloud onto external hard drive as JPEG?

Please help me! I need photos from my phone transferred to an external drive. But when I do, it's in HEIC format. My mac doesn't open these photos on preview. How can I download these photos from iCloud onto external hard drive as JPEG please? TIA

You can configure the iPhone to either convert the HEIC pictures to .jpg when transferring the pictures to macOS, or you may need to use a third party app to convert the downloaded files. I used iMazing a few years ago to convert some HEIC pictures and it works with macOS 10.10+ (I only used it a few times and didn't convert too many photos). There are other third party apps as well. Check the App Store first.


You can also configure your iOS device to store the pictures as .jpg instead of HEIC.

Also, I just saw this other trick using the Files app on the iOS device:
