Since yesterday the gmail app shows a badge for one unread message. I have zero unread messages in either of my gmail accounts. I've tried restarting my phone, and deleting and reinstalling the gmail app, but neither worked.

Thanks. I’ve checked all the different places including trash, and that just didn’t do the trick.
I would delete the google account and add it back.
Sign into your gmail on a browser on a computer to make sure you haven't missed one.
Well, although I tried exactly what you said and that didn't help, now, a while later, it has gone away!!! All Set!
