red bell with slash next to ringer volume control.I have not been able to get notifications of texts or thru facebook messenger .All my notifications seem to be on and when I test for sounds I have no problem,does the bell with slash mean something is turned off?

Have you enabled Do Not Disturb from the Control Centre?
Swipe downwards from the top-right corner of the screen. If you see the red bell, as shown here, Do Not Disturb is enabled - and all audible notifications will be silenced.
Tap the red icon to disable Do Not Disturb. This will restore audible alerts and notifications.
