Where the air quality index info comes from in iPhone Weather app?

Where exactly does the air quality index info come from in this app? Are there sensors in the iPhone or are they using local sources

Air quality data missing from weather app Sometime in the last couple of weeks, the air quality data that the Apple Weather app usually provides has gone missing. I checked and I still have "Air Quality Index" checked within the Climate options under Maps. Any idea how I can get the Air Quality data back or why it might be missing? Even the Air Quality layer on the map within the Weather app is showing null results. Thanks!

AIR QUALITY INDEX in the weather app Why can’t I always view the AQI in the weather app? It only allows me to view the map when my air quality is poor. Sometimes I just want to view the AQI around the country or where my family is located elsewhere, especially when it’s fluctuating day by day with the Canadian wildfires.

Turn off air quality alerts? Is there a way to turn off "air quality alerts"? I see them on my lock screen and in the weather app. First of all, I don't trust Apple to be looking out for my best interests, and even if the air quality was a problem, what could I do about it? I just want to turn these things off.

The phone uses local sources, just like for temp, wind, humidity, rain and snowfall amounts.
