Error #4047 doesn’t appear in Apple’s published list of error codes - however, the error is often associated with communication issues between the host computer performing the device system restore and Apple’s back-end server infrastructure.

There are many potential causes, including but not limited to (a) a temporary traffic routing problem, (b) port blocking by your internet router and/or (c) security/firewall software installed on the host computer, (d) DNS settings and (e) traffic filtering by your ISP. This is not an exhaustive list of possibilities.

a) A router restart may be beneficial - as this should reset routing tables. To restart you home router, disconnect power - then wait at least 30 seconds before restarting. When you router has rebooted (which may take several minutes), force-restart your iPad:

  • On an iPad with a Home button: Press and hold the top button and the Home button at the same time. When the Apple logo appears, release both buttons.
  • On an iPad with Face ID: Press and quickly release the volume up button, press and quickly release the volume down button, then press and hold the top button. When the Apple logo appears, release the button.

b) Check your accessible Internet Router settings. You’ll most likely access the router admin-interface using a web browser (refer to your router manual if necessary). Look for port-blocking or filtering rules - and after making note of current settings, make changes as required.

c) Check the installed security and firewall software on your computer. Look for traffic filtering or blocking rules. Consider temporarily disabling this software if necessary - recognising that your computer may be more vulnerable to compromise while this software is disabled.

d) Manually change your DNS Settings. This can either be set on a per-device basis in iPad Settings, or can be set-up on your home Router. I recommend using one of the following DNS services - for which IPv4 and IPv6 server addresses are listed:

Quad9 (recommended)

9.9.9.9

149.112.112.112

2620:fe::fe

2620:fe::9

OpenDNS

208.67.222.222

208.67.220.220

2620:0:ccc::2

2620:0:ccd::2

Cloudflare+APNIC

1.1.1.1

1.0.0.1

2606:4700:4700::1111

2606:4700:4700::1001

e) Check if your ISP has content filtering enabled for your account. This “protection” referenced in many different ways, such as age-related content filtering etc. If enabled, you should be able to disable it from your ISP account administration pages.

I hope this insight and guidance provides some direction in which to explore possible solutions to your difficulty.
