Mail app NOT showing unread count in dock icon when closed...

Hi.

I was wondering if the issue of the unread mail count NOT showing in the dock when Apple Mail is closed has been address or fixed at all?

A few versions of MacOS/OS X ago (maybe before Big Sur) used to show the mail count in the badge/icon even when Mail was closed. I'd love to have this feature back.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can share a fix for this problem :)

Greetings,

Ensuring the notifications for the Mail app are working as expected is important. To confirm, have you verified the notification settings as outlined in the following article? If not, verifying the settings can help with the unread email notification bubble. You can also find these steps listed below.

  1. Click the Apple menu towards the top-right of the display.
  2. Click System Preferences in the menu.
  3. Click Notifications & Focus.
  4. Then click Notifications.

In addition to verifying the settings, when closing the Mail app are you hitting the read circle in the Mail window or are you quitting the application entirely? If you quit the application, this would be why the notification bubble isn't updating. If you would like to provide feedback about the notification settings, you can do so via the Product Feedback website. This would ensure the appropriate individuals receive and review the feedback you provide.

Take care!

Thank you Todd0213.

My point is that previous to Big Sur and Monterrey - even when the mail app was FULLY closed/quit - the inbox's unread-count remained in the red dot on the badge-icon for Mail. I don't like to keep the mail app open indefinitely as it downloads and deletes messages from my server.....a setting i have always used as my mail account is an older POP3 type, and would therefore not let them get to my iPhone. My laptop is the "safety net" if you will.
