iMac 27 request software update to connect iPhone 13Pro and then fails to install

Since installing the software update some time ago my iMac constantly says it must download software before connecting to my iPhone 13Pro. Then the software installation fails.

I have plenty of storage available 1.3TB and the software on both the iMac (Big Sur 11.7) and the iPhone 13Pro (16.0.2) are up to date.

This has been happening for about 3 months now and there does not seem to be a fix.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Chris

Hello Dealc,

It seems like you are seeing a message to update your device whenever you connect your iPhone to your Mac, right? That means you will need to update your Mac in order to sync your iOS device with your Mac:

If you see "Software update is required to connect to your iOS device" on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

"Click Install to download and install the software so your Mac can update or sync your iOS device. If you continue to see this alert, make sure that your software on your Mac and iTunes are up-to-date."

Since you are seeing the error message that the update failed, you may need to upgrade macOS to Monterey as that isn't just an update, but an upgrade to your macOS:

Hey there Dealc,

It's good to see that the iMac is up-to-date. However, for the iPhone, there is one more update available. The latest version of iOS is 16.0.3 for iPhone 8 and later. Are you able to update the iPhone via the OTA update method? If not, please take a moment to try the OTA update. You can do this by going to Settings > General > Software Update, and update the software from there. The update process can frequently address unexpected software behavior.

Be sure to make a backup of the device before completing the update, to ensure you have a copy of all your important data. Here's information on how to backup: How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch - Apple Support.

Kind regards!
