A software update is required to connect to iPhone

Do you get this message if you connect your phone through a USB hub? My phone is iOS 16.0.2, my Mac is macOS Monterey 12.6. I noticed when I plugged phone into USB 3.0 hub, not directly into iMac.

That is a valid message and it is an update for your Mac. You should get the message when you connect the phone directly to the Mac. You will need to install that update in order to connect the phone to your Mac.

There's something wrong with this message. I got it when I plugged my iPhone 12 (iOS 16.0.3) to my iMac (OS 12.6.1) for a routine USB backup. Despite the message that an OS update was "required," the Mac recognized the iPhone and performed the synch and update as usual--unless the Finder is lying, that is. I understand that Apple wants to encourage people to upgrade to Ventura, but since when is it "required?"
