iOS 16.1 Lock Screen Wallpaper Display

I just updated my iPhone 11 to iOS 16.2 and now my lock screen is displaying just a black screen with the time, flashlight, and camera icons. I restarted the phone and verified that Settings/Wallpaper is set to select the wallpaper image that I have been using for years. After restarting the iPhone, the correct wallpaper was displayed but the next time the display went to sleep, it was again just showing the black background image.

I just got off the phone with support at Apple with this same problem, my custom images I've had set for my Home and Lock screens are suddenly missing and I'm seeing a black background for both since the iOS 16.1 update. The first support person had me heading down a path backing up then wiping my phone completely, and restoring it to factory settings and reinstalling iOS 16.1. Luckily, they sent me to a senior support person, who diagnosed the problem -- and it's now solved. The issue had to do with my Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb and Sleep settings. If you have those Focus times set, you MUST select a Customized Screen for Lock and Home screens, or else when those Focus times kick on, the screen settings will default to black (nothing). Once we figured this out, I reset my non-focus Home and Lock screens to my original photos and the issue has not reoccurred.

It’s getting more and more interesting. When I finally solved the wallpaper problem with your help, has been very excited for a half of a day. And now… it is back to black again. Somehow the Seetings feature on Dark mode sets automatically and everything starts all over again + all other appses, messages, mail backgrounds are black now🤦‍♀️ doesn’t come back to ‘normal’ after turning the black mode off.

This is really frustrating. My wallpaper is a precious picture I no longer have anywhere else since losing a phone. I can see it but it won’t stay as my background. As I’m not able to replace it I’m hoping Apple will FIX THIS GLITCH SOON so we don’t have to waste time here. Good job we don’t all pay a lot of money for these products! Anyone heard of Samsung?!!

My phone updated to 16.1.2 and is now having the same issue everything I try to do does not fix it. I agree with the commentary above saying that we pay way too much money for these phones for this to even be an issue to try to “workaround”. When is an update to fix this issue coming out. For me personally, my lock screen was standard from the phone. My home screen was a picture of my dog who literally just passed away a month ago and going through photos to find that one and apply repeatedly is just not ideal right now. Fix the issue!

I've had this issue for several weeks, since 16.x, forget when it started. None of the suggested solutions has worked for me, I don't have any focus things turned on, and have repeatedly reconfirmed this following everyone's suggestions.

Good news, in my case: the 16.2 update has resolved this, at least for the past 2 days since I upgraded. It used to be off-again-on-again, so I'm still not sure it won't recur. But at the moment, I'm back to my correct lock screen. Hope that may work for others.

This problem started for me with installation of iOS 16.1, was solved with an update to iOS 16.1, and now has started again with iOS 16.2. My Lock Screen is fine but my Home Screen starts out almost fine on restart (almost, because I get a red notification dot with no number on the phone icon) but after the first time the phone goes to sleep the Home Screen goes to a black background and stays that way. Same problem both times. Super annoying because it was fixed until 16.2 made it start again, and I don’t have the photo I use stored elsewhere that I can find. I’m on an iPhone X.
