iOS 16.1 Lock Screen Wallpaper Display

I just updated my iPhone 11 to iOS 16.2 and now my lock screen is displaying just a black screen with the time, flashlight, and camera icons. I restarted the phone and verified that Settings/Wallpaper is set to select the wallpaper image that I have been using for years. After restarting the iPhone, the correct wallpaper was displayed but the next time the display went to sleep, it was again just showing the black background image.

I just got off the phone with support at Apple with this same problem, my custom images I've had set for my Home and Lock screens are suddenly missing and I'm seeing a black background for both since the iOS 16.1 update. The first support person had me heading down a path backing up then wiping my phone completely, and restoring it to factory settings and reinstalling iOS 16.1. Luckily, they sent me to a senior support person, who diagnosed the problem -- and it's now solved. The issue had to do with my Settings > Focus > Do Not Disturb and Sleep settings. If you have those Focus times set, you MUST select a Customized Screen for Lock and Home screens, or else when those Focus times kick on, the screen settings will default to black (nothing). Once we figured this out, I reset my non-focus Home and Lock screens to my original photos and the issue has not reoccurred.

Without being able to duplicate the problem - reliably be able cause it to occur - I'm not sure what I would tell Apple. "Sometimes my wallpaper turns black for no reason". But we can give it a try and perhaps, reference this thread. (I had hoped that as this is a tread on Apple's Community, that someone from Apple would be at least aware of our 6 pages of comments).

Been fighting with this for an hour...giving up my favorite photos on both homescreen and Lock Screen... almost ready to chuck the phone at the nearest brick wall..... pathetic.

Apparently, you can't have separate photos for Home Screen and Lock Screen anymore.... WOW... everything's a ****** "pair".... well FU Apple!

I fought with it long enough but it's off the chart BAD human interface code. -this was NOT this twisted before 16.x

Whoever the HUD is at Apple, is painfully obvious its not who it used to be.

Now, I've discovered another bug: If there is a person in the photo that you use for the screen saver, -depending on how tall in the photo they are, if the head of the person is high enough to reach the time display --> check it out the persons head covers up some part of the numbers in the time.

So if you wake up and touch your phone display to look - the persons head covers up part of the clock now.

However, for me and my 14 Pro Max, the problem started while using 16.0 and persisted through subsequent updates. And just to be clear, I've had the problem without the phone being "idle" - I use AOD, so the phone display is always being refreshed, though at a slower refresh rate and a lower brightness, but not "idle". And I have experienced days long periods of not having a problem only to have it seemly randomly remanisfist itself. Personally, I have yet to find a fix that works and severl that seem to for days long periods of time.

I've now update to the public beta for the upcoming 16.2. As a beta user I can report any problems encountered while the code is being built by the developers at Apple. (Note: I wouldn't recomment anyone using a beta if they are not familiar with the kinds of problems that may occure and on a device they depend on for 'mission critical' situations.).

Today my Lock Screen started going black too. I restarted my phone and my picture came back but 2 min later it disappeared and I’m back to black. My IOS is 16.1.1 and I don’t have a prompt to update. Totally sucks because I don’t have that picture anymore either on my phone. Or at least I can’t find it and there is no way to ever recreate that moment. I updated a while ago and never had issues until today/last night over night.

This did not work for me. I’ve had the same Lock Screen for five years, it shows that it’s set currently. However it’s just a black screen. When I try to add new the photo I want is not in the list. You can imagine what it would be like trying to go thru photos from 5 years ago. Hope they fix this. Or, you know, test these updates before mass release.

That's a common problem, the actual cause seems to be some "random" occurrence possibly having to do with the transition between iOS 16.0 and updates. Random is very hard to cure because without an identifiable cause you can never be sure of the fix. I strongly suspect that the December update to iOS will feature changes to wallpapers and their interaction with DND and/or AOD that will also fix the black wallpaper problem.

Hello again everyone. Over a month now and not a single problem...until today.

Earlier today, I took my phone out of my pocket and there was a game open, that I have not used in a long while. I could not close it or minimize it or anything. It would allow me to play it, but could not make it close.

I rebooted my phone and guess what came back? Yep the black wallpaper again. I have tried all the usual workarounds, but cannot get my original wallpaper back.

If anyone at Apple is reading this, can you please confirm that you are working to solve this?

Agreed 100 percent! I am walking 3 days and overthinking my children did something / I pressed the wrong button / googling how to fix this problem. And finally I found this chat. Yes, everything happened after the last version update 😱😱😱😶😶 this is way too much for @Apple. Maybe some notification could been sent about announcing this PROBLEM, m, @Apple?
