how to program action button to pause and start activity on apple watch - not to start an activity - but to be able while already working out to pause and start that workout without having to swipe over to the left ?

The Action button is a wonderful addition exactly for this use case. You can pause the workout without needing to touch the screen by pressing the action button and the side button together. When you want to resume the workout again, press the action button. hope that helps

Here is what I sent as feedback to Apple:

Future Update Request: Would like to program action button to pause and start activity on apple watch - not to start an activity/workout - but while already working out to be able to pause and start that workout without having to swipe over to

the left ? I use this watch outdoors heavily and with sunblock, my fingers smear the watch face so it does not

respond very well.

I don't believe that is an option with the Activity Button, but it's a good idea and you should definitely let Apple know, by providing feedback through this link --> Feedback - Watch - Apple
