Extremely slow external SSD read and write speed after Ventura update - MacBook Pro 16 M1 Max

Machine = MacBook Pro 16 M1 Max.

Since the Ventura update all my external drives are transferring at around 5-30MB/s down from around 800-900MB/s. I have a mix of Crucial, Samsung, and Kingston SSD drives which they all have the same problem.

Reinstalled the Ventura update with support, did not help, all drives have been tested on an identical MacBook Pro running Monterey and they work as normal.

Im struggling to make a Time Machine backup as it keeps failing, and transferring to my backup drive takes an extremely long time.

I work in Video, and its brought all my apps to a crawl as the read write speed is so slow. This is affecting my work, so help would be greatly appreciated.

1, has anyone had this problem?

2, how easy is it to go back to Monterey as this laptop is critical for my work,

3, any possible solutions?

MacBook Pro 16″, macOS 13.0

Hurray I've solved the problem,I experienced my drives get slow

immediately I upgraded from Monterey to Ventura so I was sure all my

drives were fine since 30 mins before they were working fine on Monteray before the upgrade.

Here's what I did I figured that since my external

hard drive activity light was continuously blinking probably a process

that was utilizing the drive, my guess was Spotlight search was indexing

my drive so I added it to the privacy exclusion list by going to system

settings, then Siri & spotlight and at the bottom selecting

spotlight privacy, I then dragged and dropped my external drive to the

exclusion list then selected done, now every drive I add to the

exclusion list works fine, ANOTHER OPTION would be to leave your drives pluged in and let spotlight finish indexing them and they will work just fine after some time though it may take a while to index them so be patient.

There is no app called "open". Did it say anything else? Can you provide a screenshot? It would be helpful to know which specific system modification software is causing this. Unfortunately, Ventura's new "Login Items" interface is not Apple's finest work. Most items are clearly identified. But these are the ones least likely to cause any problems. But if you have flaky things or malicious software, they are very difficult to identify using this interface. Ironically, such apps are extremely easy to identify anywhere other than in Apple's interface.

Since upgrading to Ventura on my iMac it takes an age for some of my external SSDs to mount. Sometimes more than ten minutes. I am a Logic user and have several terrabytes of plugins across four drives. Data transfer speed seems to be affected as well since some of the sounds are unusable since installing Ventura - presumably because data x-fer speeds are so slow. I note that this only seems to affect y Samsung T7 drives. My Samsung T5 is behaving as normal.

We just received a 16" MacBook Pro with M1 Max, 32GB RAM, 2TB SSD with Ventura. On a M1 Mac Mini running Monterey, we use a 2TB Western Digital NVMe in an OWC Envoy Express Thunderbolt 3 Bus-Powered Enclosure for M.2 NVMe SSD. I was concerned about the reports of slow-downs. So, I just ran the Blackmagic Speed Test on the M1 Max - same as I did on the Mac Mini - and the result was the same. Both tests returned the same read speed of 1501 MB/sec.

Well, Apple asks what is on my mind.... What can I say....

With the SSD problem I have one conclusion: Inside Apple no one uses Apple, right ? Otherwise it MUST HAVE BEEN NOTED before release of Ventura.

We paid a lot for our 2 MAC-PRO's, but in this way they render useless.

I am sorry to say, but what a shame that Apple releases software like this...

2019 Mac Pro Ventura

I have 2

After upgrading to Ventura it takes several seconds to read any information from an internal SATA physical drive.

When I click on a folder in Finder (that is on the real HD,)Finder just sits there for several seconds before any of the contents appear.

After they do the read and write speed is normal.

It’s as if the drive is completely asleep and has to spin up first.

Ventura offers no way to control HD sleep characteristics like previous OS’s did

I realize that the all new Macs are focused on SSD’s, but they should still work with the zillions of physical drives that are still in use.

Hoping for a fix.

This example does not apply to my situation.

I am using a Mac Pro, not aMacBook Pro.

The new Mac Pro’s come with proprietary SSD’s, but you can use HDD’s that mount inside and connect vis SATA cables.

The HDDs on the old Mac Pro’s used to literally plug directly into the motherboard and were as fast as lightning to connect.

The new SATA wired HDD's act as if they are sleeping and thus, you have to wait while they wake up.

After they do, they access data normally.

The new Energy Saver settings only have an on-off setting for putting HDD’s to sleep.

A time-out feature would be welcome, because they seem to go to sleep shortly after the last bite of data is read.
