Ventura breaks monitor detection?

Mac Studio with 1x monitor connected via on board HDMI, 2x connected via Startech Thunderbolt 3 to Dual DisplayPort adapter.

Setup worked fine before upgrade.

All works fine on boot.

Now if I power off all my monitors at mains (Mac stays on) and then return power to them only the HDMI connected monitor works. The other two are not detected (not shown in Settings->Displays).

If I unplug and reinsert the Startech adapter the monitors aren't detected. The only way to get them back is a reboot.

Any help appreciated!

Mac Studio, macOS 13.0

Go to Displaylink's website and download the latest Displaylink drivers and install. This will fix the issue. Dell adapters depend on Displaylink drivers to function properly. Most people don't realize all these adapters are dependent on the Displaylink software running properly. Upgrades often break the drivers are require a reinstall. Install Displaylink drivers and the issue will be resolved.

@smcca945 It's not a Displaylink issue, the Dell model number OzCreations lists is not a Displaylink device. My Startech adapter is not a Displaylink device. I used Displaylink previously on Mac Mini M1 to get 3 displays - whilst ok it wasn't quite there - being able to drive natively was one of the reasons for Mac Studio upgrade. Displaylink is closer to VNC - software based render of output pushed out to special device on USB etc.

So guys, I have th Samsung ultra wide 34inch that supports PIP. The supported ports are DisplayPort, USB-C, and HDMI.

I have an Intel 2019 and 2021 M1 macbook. both are using Ventura 13.1 for use of universal control. Before 13.1 upgrade, my setup using usbc and DisplayPort worked seamlessly in clamshell mode. After the upgrade, things got wonky. From a technical perspective, I can say that it seems the DisplayPort and usbc port is sending out the wrong signals to the external monitor for sleeping and in clamshell mode and can even possibly be even “breaking” protocol as one case, I’ve disconnected the dp connection and my monitor completely shuts off and doesn’t turn back on unless I either unplug my monitor OR! Plug the dp back in! The usbc seems to have the most critical problem with the Intel macbook as another case is that that display won’t even show up on external monitor but the external monitor CAN detect the usbc connection.

I’ve since settled with using the hdmi port for now as that has taken away all of my headache and trail and error that wasted 2 days of my vacation.

so my setup now is that the dp connects to M1 as there’s less problems there and my Intel connects to hdmi. When all fails hdmi seems really reliable.

Monitor detection is definitely buggy. I am facing even worse problems ... External display issues over and over aga… - Apple Community

I am not able to connect external monitor after the update. When I plug the usb-c cable the whole system is laggy and kernel_task and window server process are taking too much cpu and the system i stuck forever until I unplug the monitor cable.

A fix would be fabulous, but they don’t want to own this. I’m told it isn’t a thing and I’m speculating and starting rumors which is why the keep removing my post.

i’m not willing to completely re-image my machine wiping out all my software and setting to fix something they released without testing. Desperately looking for a fix, just not that.

Glad that it worked for you, but unfortunately didn't work for me.

With more troubleshooting, It appears to be only the external HDMI detection that's an issue; an external USB-C monitor I tested is working fine. But couldn't detect the external HDMI even when holding down the Option key in the Displays control panel to toggle the "Detect Displays" button.
