Usb C hub not working on MacOS Ventura

Hi guys,

I’ve updated my M1 Macbook Pro to MacOS Ventura 13.0. Ever since, the usb c hub of my Dough Spectrum ES07D03 stopped working (and it still is working on Windows).

I’ve allowed accessories to connect (setting is set at “Always” in System Preferences > Privacy & Security), and the OS asked me if i wanted to allow some USB peripherals to connect to the macbook.

After tweaking a bit here and there yesterday, it finally worked as it should. But this morning, it didn’t. Let me explain my setup quickly:

My Macbook pro is closed on my desktop, with an HDMI cable plugged in to it, going to my 2nd screen.

It has a thunderbolt 3 cable going into the Spectrum, and on the hub I have: a logitech dongle for a wireless headset, an usb-c webcam plugged in in the usb-c port, and usb hub from anker in the last usb A port, which powers mouse, keyboard, and external mic.

I used to just type randomly on my keyboard to wake the whole thing up. This morning, nothing happened. I opened my macbook and told me the following thing:

So i’ve tried unplugging everything and tada: when unplugging / plugging my mic back, everything went up and working.

But everytime my macbook goes into sleep mode, it does the same thing. I have to open the lid, then unplug / wait / plug my usb devices again to make it work correctly.

I'm thinking about downgrading to Monterey where everything was working perfectly, unless you guys know what i can do about it ?

Sharing my own solution that I discovered today. Short Version: Check your Allow accessories to connect option. You can find this in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Scroll down and you'll find it above FireVault. I changed this value to Automatically When Unlocked and it solved everything.

Long Version: I have a USB C display out to a monitor that has USB A ports. Display works without issues after updating to Ventura, but the USB A ports stopped reading devices. In addition to this, I noticed my external HDD wasn't direct connecting via USB C either. After several unplug/replug attempts, I noticed a prompt would pop up but disappear in less than a second. Had to record my screen and playback frame by frame to read it. It was asking me to allow the accessory to connect. I changed the value in the settings described above and solved all USB C issues including the HDD and hub! The strange thing is that the Allow prompt never showed up when I tried using the USB hub. My guess is that this prompt is not showing up for most devices and leaving Ventura users in the dark.

I just fixed this issue for my 2021 M1 16" MacBook Pro.

Mac OS Ventura requires you grant access to USB C accessories. I didn't receive a popup prompting me to grant access to my dock, so it didn't work. My steps to fix:

System Settings > Privacy & Security > Allow accessories to connect > Change to "Always"

Choose the security setting you're comfortable with, of course. As soon as I changed this setting, my dock, monitors, external camera, etc came to life.

Oddly enough my USB-C hub works with 13.1... sometimes. After closing all programs and rebooting it seems as if the USB-C Hub (Dell WD19S) is recognized and delivers LAN, Power and Keyboard properly (HDMI was sketchy before Ventura, too).

However: after sleep-mode it seems to pick up the hub, but to drop it a couple of seconds later and after that the hub does not even work with another M1 Max laptop, that is still on 12.x MacOS. Unplugging and reattaching power from/to the hub makes it work under MacOS 12.x again and - if I had rebooted - Ventura, too.

It's really odd and I still dislike it, that Apple broke stuff, that used to work.

Sounds almost ridiculous, but perhaps worth a try! Even though USB-C can be plugged in either right-side-up or upside-down, you can try flipping the usb-c plug. In my case, I was using a usb-c extension cable from my usb-c hub to my 2018 Macbook Air (also, I do not have the "Allow accessories to connect" option at all). I flipped the female USB-C plug and now my usb-C hub works again!

This is where I found the solution that worked for me. I can confirm and vouch that the following worked for me. Wired usb keyboard and mouse stopped work… - Apple Community

I tried this and it did not fix the problem for me. I changed it back to "Automatically when unlocked".

However, what did "work" for me was the following:

  1. After plugging in a Satechi USB-C Hub to my Mac, my external screen (connected via HDMI) stays blank
  2. Go to System Settings -> Displays and see that the display is recognized by the system despite it being blank
  3. I choose the external monitor, change the resolution from the default 1920x1200 to 1920x1080 (probably any other resolution would work as well)
  4. Voilà! The display starts showing a picture
  5. Turn the resolution back to the native resolution of 1920x1200
  6. Repeat the procedure every time I connect the USB-C dongle

13.2 makes my devices more reliably connect, but it’s still not as good as 12.*.

unplugging/replugging my USB C device connection *while the device is unlocked* usually fixes connectivity issues for me now, which is a simpler workaround than I had before. This is still unacceptable performance but at least I no longer dread unplugging my laptop from its workstation.

I have a similar problem with an Anker 565. Worked fine under Monterrey and I believe under 13.1. But starting with 13.2, the usb ports stopped being powered: no more mouse, camera, headphone.

Apple support asked me to contact Anker support. I have now been in e-mail conversation with Anker for 2 weeks. They provided a firmware update but no instructions on how to install it. Firmware update to be done using a windows PC, which I have. Now, after 2 weeks, I still do no have working instructions. Their tool expects a .eeprom or .bin file and they provided a .fullrom file. They asked me to provide a video of where I get stuck, which I did. They also communicated to me that any Apple OS update may make the usb-c hub non-functional.

I have an M1 Pro MacBook Pro 16'.

Is there a usb-c hub or thunderbolt dock that does not suffer from such problems? Does a solution from Anker even exist? Or is there a solution from Apple?

Just repeating what other people have said before, but I've had the exact same problem as federmoose ever since updating to Ventura. Under Monterey using HDMI monitor with a Satechi USB-C dock could sometimes require pulling out and re-inserting the HDMI cable, but on Ventura rebooting the computer with the USB-C dock plugged in is the only way to make it work.

Curiously the screen might show up in System Settings -> Displays but the screen would remain black, as if there was no signal.

Hi,

I'm not sure if that's relevant, but I have the same issue with a keyboard that disconnects over night. It's connected to thunderbolt/usb-c port.

I've found that the name of my keyboard was reported in /private/var/log/wifi.log log as a kind of wifi device. The log shows exact time when the device is being turned off, but does not say what is the reason. So I thought that maybe it has something to do with the thunderbolt network settings? Right now I've deactivated thunderbolt bridge from network settings and I'm going to check if that helps.

What's funny, the "other services" list in the network settings, where thunderbolt bridge was listed, was full of rp2040 entries. That's the chip name my keyboard is based on, but here they are listed as modems.

Maybe your USB hub is also somehow detected as a network modem or such?
