apple watch series 3 won't run interval timer AND workout apps

hi all! i do the run/walk method, and i'm struggling to get my Apple Watch (series 3) to cooperate. if i try to use my interval timer (for knowing when to run and when to walk) at the same time as the Workouts app (for distance/pace), whichever one i open second will close out the first. i've disconnected the interval timer from Health in hopes that will fix the problem, but it hasn't.

i'm trying to run ONLY with my watch and not bring my phone as well; obviously if i have my phone too i can run the timer on there and Workouts on the app, but i'm hoping for a single solution for the watch. (also wondering if it's just the age of the watch?) the problem happens for other things too -- fr ex, i couldn't run my interval timer and the Nike run club app at the same time either.

Hey there stitchnerrrd,

Your Apple Watch is designed to be able to run the Workout app simultaneously with other apps, however certain apps that perform the same function type may not be able to run at the same time. Since your interval timer may be considered a workout/exercise app, it may draw on the same processing resources as the workout app and thus prevent both from running at the same time on the watch.

To help us test this, let's have you start a workout on the Apple Watch, then use the built-in watchOS Timer app to set a timer. This is just so we can see if the native Timer app stops the Workout app as well.

If it does not, your watch is functioning as it should and the issue is that the two exercise apps cannot run simultaneously. If the Timer app also stops the Workout app, however, don't hesitate to respond back with the watchOS version you're using.

Best.

Hi Lindsay,

Thanks for that. I tested it this morning, and the built-in Timer will run while the Workout app is also running.

Can you tell me if there's a way to tell it to treat the Intervals Timer app as if it were NOT an exercise app? I've turned off all its connections to the Health app via my phone, and switched off access to Motion & Fitness in the app's settings as well, but none of that seems to make a difference.

Thanks!
