ipod stuck in recovery mode

My son (4yo) found my old ipod in the house and wants to play with it. I can't remember my passcode so I tried searching how to reset. It appears my ipod is stuck in recovery mode. It only displays the plug and itunes logo on the screen. I go into itunes and click restore, but I get an error saying was in DFU mode and needs to go back into DFU. This is as far as I can get.
