Error Codes for Mac SE/30

My Mac SE/30 lost its internal hard drive SCSI connection. There are important files stored on the internal HD that I need to retrieve.

A sad Mac icon appeared with this code:

000000F

0000013

I can boot the SE/30 with a System file on a floppy disk, but when I do, the Desktop Folder isn't detected, no hard drive icon appears. Only the icon of the floppy disk and the Trash icon appear.

How do I reconnect the internal HD to the SCSI port?

Thanks for all suggestions,

Jane Youngblood

Hi,

Is the hard drive (cable) still connected to the logic board?

Does the Sad Mac only appear when attempting to start from the internal hard drive, not when starting from the system floppy?

Any change if you press and hold down the four keys Command(Apple), Option(Alt), Shift and Delete(Backspace) when starting from the floppy (or the hard drive)?

Do you have access to another old Macintosh computer where you could create/modify a startup floppy to hold disk utilities, and possibly test the SCSI hard drive?

A remote diagnosis is difficult. It could be a problem with the hard drive itself, or with the internal SCSI circuits on the logic board.

It may become necessary to open the computer and remove the hard drive for external testing. However, opening a compact Mac like the SE/30 is very dangerous because of the high voltages, and must be performed by qualified personnel only. Dangerous charges can remain in various components even with the computer turned off and disconnected from the mains.

Thanks for your suggestions.

After booting several times from a system file on a floppy disk, the SE30 eventually could boot from the system on the SE30 internal hard drive. I had a hunch that repeated booting and then shutting down from the Finder might overwrite any garbled data that might have prevented the Finder from locating the System file on the hard drive. I don't know what really brought the system back. I'm just glad the problem is gone.
